Purpose: Linguistic features such as lack of cohesiveness and topic maintenance are shown while elderly people uttering. there were few studies on topic maintenance to investigate expressive language of elderly people. the purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of topic maintenance of normal elderly people by age. Methods: The subjects were 84 elderly speakers aged from 65 and older. Task was implemented for this research which were conversation task. Statistical analysis was performed by one way ANOVA to determine whether there was a significant difference in the response of the subjects by gender and age and by comparing the age group with young-old elderly (aged between 65 and 70), middle-old elderly (between 70 and 75), old-old elderly (between 75 and 80), oldest elderly (over 80). Results: First, in age with topic manipulation, significant difference was observed in the rate of topic maintenance, the rate of self-centered. Conclusions: Through this study, we could learn relatively less damaged even if aging progressed that rate of inappropriate change and average topic maintenance time which did not observed significant difference in age group by ordinary elderly people. Also, it was found that rate of topic maintenance and rate of self-centered which observed significant difference, it showed clear damage as aging progressed and needed relatively difficult ability in conversation situation.
