      Curcumin has been actively investigated as an anti-cancer drug since it induces cell growth inhibition and apoptosis in many cancer cells. Curcumin acts through modulation of multiple pathways and genes.
      In this study, curcumin inhibited MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell growth, which was accompanied by induction of apoptosis and reduction of visfatin gene expression. The MDA-MB-231 cells transfected with visfatin siRNA displayed enhanced sensitivity in growth inhibition to curcumin, whereas cells treated with visfatin protein attenuated curcumin-induced cell growth inhibition in MDA-MB-231 cells. We therefore suggest that the decrease of visfatin by curcumin may contribute to the inhibition of breast cancer cell growth. (Cancer Prev Res 16, 110-117, 2011)
