Xuanhe huapu(『宣和畵譜』 Xuanhe Painting Catalogue), completed in about 1120 during the reign of Huizong(1100-1125), is the first imperial sponsored painting catalogue and one of the most important written records in the study of Northern Song painting. It includes biographical sketches of 231 painters from the Six-dynasties period to the Huizong`s reign and lists their 6,396 works kept in the imperial collection. The Xuanhe Painting Catalogue is organized by ten categories divided according to the different subject matters of painting and lists painters of each category first by period of activity and then by status. The subject matters are representative of their art, and each section of subject matter has essays that explain its cultural significance, key features of its historical development, and achievement of major painters. By careful reading and reexamining of the text in landscape category which most clearly reveals the characteristic constituents of the catalogue and political intention of Huizong and his compilers, this article aims to illuminate Northern Song ideas about painting, theoretical background behind the development of landscape style, critical opinions about painters, and impact of the catalogue on later understanding of landscape painting. The biography of landscapists and lists of their painting reflect Huizong`s intention to establish an authoritative, continuous visual history of landscape painting according to his own critical opinion. It also exhibits his support for the theory of literati painting consistent with the ideas of Su Shi and his circle in spite of their exclusion from the catalogue, from which we can infer that Huizong frame the history of painting with the strong desire to highlight the cultural prowess and centrality of the court and convey the message that the emperor was central to the comprehensive cultural achievement. The Xuanhe Painting Catalogue continued to be very important source to the study of history of Chinese painting and criticism, therefore, more in-depth studies on each category of the catalogue would provide insight into better understanding of the landscape painting in the Northern Song and succeeding periods.
