Social interest in the development and art of Chinese crafts has increased during the 21st century, but the there is a lack of effort to learning double-sided embroideries directly or transferring these traditions. In addition, studies related to double-sided styles are minimal. Therefore, this paper’s purpose is to analyze the history and characteristics of the double-sided styles of the four great masters and the minority Li people and apply them to modern fashion design to facilitate people’s awareness of and the modernization of double-sized numbers and to create basic data for future scholars studying Chinese embroidery. In addition, modern fashion products were developed and utilized to reflect the characteristics of the five double-sided styles identified.
This research analyzed the history and characteristics of the four major and double-sided embroideries in the literature and related historical materials. The literature included papers and magazines related to the four major and double-sided styles, and the photographic data comprised relevant pictures and pictures from the Internet; these were intended to assist with the research. In addition, it was intended to apply and develop modern fashion design by reflecting the characteristics of each type of double-sided embroideries.
The distinguishing characteristics of the analyzed four master figures and the Li people are as follows. First, the embroidery designs feature bright lines, sharp needles, and exquisite craftsmanship. Second, regarding constants, the structure is precise, the color is clear, and the various acupuncture methods are expressive. Third, many of them are made of chrysanthemums, which are beautiful in color and highly decorative. Fourth, tentacles appear relatively more often on goods related to daily living than on works of art. They feature celebratory colors and are embroidered on blankets, pillowcases, clothes, shoes and paintings. Fifth, Wolsu is busy and colorful, and the repair lines are thick and loose, making great use of the phoenix, peony, chicken, and goose patterns. Lastly, the Li people used their special patterns and these patterns had their own meanings.
The two-sided embroidery characteristics of the four master figures and the Li people are as follows. First, a small number of double-sided designs are embroidered on the inside and outside in the same area, with different colors and patterns placed on the outside and inside. For example, the front can be a person even if the back can be different designs. Second, Sangsu can be a person in front and an animal in the back, but the design’s size is the same. Third, the two-sided numbers of the few and the constants, except for differences in acupuncture, are mainly plaster with a relatively bright, constant colors. Fourth, both sides of the tentacles use color. Fifth, the moon is a three-dimensional double-sided tree with the same outer and inner surface and often uses gold and silver thread. Sixth, the double-sided designs of the Li people have a unique pattern of their own: two sides with the same exterior and face, embroidery that has an antique, natural ethnic style, and surrealistic color in which the pattern pursues a sense of symmetry and abstraction.
Based on the study’s results, a total of five designs were developed to devise a plan for the promotion and modernization of traditional double-sided styles and to facilitate the continued development of double-sided styles. In addition, a design method that can be applied to the development of eco-friendly clothing should be possible in the future, as it is possible to develop clothing products with different exterior and interior designs.
Based on this study’s results, more people should understand and become interested in the history and characteristics of the two-sided tree. This will be helpful for the continued development of the two-sided embroideries. In addition, it is meaningful that data were developed to assist related future research by understanding the characteristics of various double-sided embroidery styles identified through this study.
