장욱진의 불교 인연과 관련 회화 연구 = Research on Chang Ucchin’s Buddhism-related paintings

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘장욱진과 불교’ 관련하여서는 여러 주요한 에피소드들이 청소년기부터 꾸준히 언급되어 왔으나 실제로 장욱진의 작품에서 불교 관련 작품이 등장하는 것은 1970년대인 그의 나이 53세 경부터이다. 주요한 대표작인 <진진묘>, <팔상도> 및 <미륵존여래불> 등 장욱진의 먹그림들은 그의 불교에 대한 우호적인 태도와 가족들의 불심, 그리고 백성욱 박사와의 인연 등 불교 인사들과의 관계와 밀접한 관련이 있다. 또한 그는 사찰 답사를 즐기며 특히 고찰의 마애불과 석불을 즐겨그렸다.
그의 작품은 대체로 작은 화면일 뿐 아니라 언제나 ‘심플’을 지향했던 장욱진에게 걸맞게 일견단순, 소박해 보일지도 모른다. 그러나 그의 작품에서 느껴지는 밀도감과 종교성으로부터 오는 짙은 여운은, 그가 행했던 오랜 시간의 바라봄과 오랜 시간의 산책과 더불어 마치 수행자와 같이 화폭 위에 그만큼의 쌓고 덜어내는 행위의 오랜 반복들, 즉 장욱진의 시간이 오롯이 쌓여서 나오는결과일 것이다. 장욱진의 작품은 ‘그림처럼 정확한 나의 分身은 없다’고 그 자신이 얘기했듯이 장욱진 그 자체이고, 그것이 곧 그의 작품 앞에 오래 서있게 하는 이유이다. 수행하듯 반복했던 그의일상과 작업, 그의 말처럼 ‘내세우는’ 것은 아니었지만 불교에 깊이 스며든 그의 삶은 어떤 재료와바탕이건, 매체를 막론하고 그의 작품 속에 녹아 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

While researchers have introduced various episodes connected with Chang Ucchin’s relationship with Buddhism in his younger days, it was in the 1970s, when Jang was 53 years old, that he began to produce works related with Buddhism. The widely admired ink-wash paintings of Buddhist themes that he produced from that time onwards - such as Truly True Wonder (Jinjinmyo), Eight Phases of the Shakyamuni’s Life (Palsangdo) and Maitreya Buddha (Mireukjonyeoraebul) - are closely related with his friendly attitude towards Buddhism, his family’s devotion to Buddhism, and his friendship with Buddhists such as Dr. Baek Seonguk.
The artist also loved touring Buddhist temples and producing paintings of rock-carved Buddhist figures and stone Buddhist sculptures.
The paintings of Chang Ucchin seem to be characterized by their small size and simple depictions of his subjects. Despite their surface simplicity, however, his paintings create an atmosphere of profound religious density and quality, reflecting the times of calmness he enjoyed while taking a long and close look at the objects around him during his long walks. His works appear to be the result of his repeated action of piling ideas on, and then taking them off, the canvas, which may be comparable with the life of an ascetic, and the accumulation of Chang Ucchin’s own moments. His paintings were, and are, the artist himself, as he himself once stated: “There is no ‘my other self’ that is as truthful as my paintings.” That is why his paintings compel his viewers to remain standing before them for a long time. Although neither his daily life nor his activities as an artist may be as “profound” as the life of an ascetic, his deep, lifelong attraction to Buddhism is clearly reflected in his works, regardless of the materials and media he used.
