At twenty minutes past five on the morning of Monday, December 28th, a great convulsion of nature took place in the Straits of Messina, which was preceded by loud peals of thunder and flashes of lightning. The towns of Messina in Sicily, and Reggio on the opposite side of the Straits, in Calabria, felt the full force of the shock.
