From 2nd semester 1968 to 1st semester 1969, a total 1,600 male and female students in Seoul were carefully selected and asked with the method of questionnaire to study the purpose of use of analeptics, frequency of its administration, development of habituation and side effects of the drugs.
The students were selected in the major of humanities, social science, natural science and the arts. Also, all years of students were included with even distribution for this study.
Commerical names of drugs were preferred in the questionnaire to the original ones in the light of public acquaintances.
Results
1) Completed questionnaire were returned from 1,566 out of 1,600 students. Most of the parts of students, 1,121(71.6%)denied having used an analeptics. The remaining 445(28.4%)respondents had used the drug more than once.
2) Begining the using drugs showed following order ; high school, college, and elementary school, with decreasing order.
3) Purpose for which an analeptics was first used:
a) to prevent sleepiness and facilitate leaning:67.8%
b) co combat fatigue, increase motivation, elevate mood, promot concentration, abolish depression: 27%
c) others: 5.2%
4) The majority of users turned out experimenters who took a drug several times and quit, being aware of development of habituation and those who are still in active use were extremely few.
5) The administration of the drugs was effective in the prevention of sleep, however not effective for the purpose of study.
6) It was found that the unpleasant effects were as follow:
palpitation, vertigo, headache, abdominal pain and urticaria in this order.
