The purpose of this study is to explore the strategies used by advanced Taiwanese learners to effectively learn Sino-Korean. It focuses on determination strategies, which are about discovering meaning on your own when you encounter a new word. Currently, there is a lot of research on learning strategies for Sino-Korean for learners of Sino native language learners, but most of it has been done with Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese learners. There is no research specifically focused on Taiwanese learners within the same Sino-character cultural sphere. However, both Taiwan’s standard Mandarin (Taiwanese Chinese) and the native dialect Taiwanese have similarities with Sino-Korean words. These similarities suggest that Taiwanese learners may find it helpful to learn Sino-Korean words through the similarities with Taiwanese Chinese and Taiwanese. This consideration prompted the initiation of this study.
This study conducted surveys and experiments to understand the learning strategies Taiwanese learners use based on the similarities between Sino-Korean words, Taiwanese Chinese, and Taiwanese. In particular, it examined differences in the strategies and effectiveness among learners, depending on their frequency of use and proficiency in their native dialect, Taiwanese.
The study revealed that most learners perceived similarities between Taiwanese Chinese, Taiwanese, and Sino-Korean words. Learners who frequently used Taiwanese in their daily lives felt a stronger similarity between Taiwanese and Korean Sino-Korean words compared to those who seldom used Taiwanese. Consequently, these learners employed strategies based on their knowledge of Taiwanese more frequently.
There were differences in the strategies used by learners depending on the perceived similarities between Sino-Korean words, Taiwanese Chinese, and Taiwanese. The most commonly used strategies were comparing with Taiwanese Chinese and analyzing the context. Strategies involving comparisons with Taiwanese were the least used; however, when the Sino-Korean word were highly similar with the Taiwanese vocabulary, the usage rate of comparison with Taiwanese increased compared to less similar vocabulary.
This indicates that learning strategies leveraging the similarities between Korean Sino-Korean words and Taiwanese are meaningful for teaching Korean Sino-Korean words. Based on the experimental results, the study proposes learning strategies for advanced Taiwanese learners that utilize the similarities between Korean Sino-Korean words, Taiwanese Chinese, and Taiwanese. This study contributes to the research on learning strategies for Taiwanese learners and can serve as a reference for teaching Sino-Korean words to Taiwanese learners.
