The main purpose of this study is to estimate the social costs of transport modes such as inland truckings, rails, and coastal shippings, and compare them one another. For this purpose, this paper adapts a Contingent Valuation Method which can estimate monetary values of the considering transport modes at a time.
The final results show that the non-marketable social costs of the inland trucking is 432 billion-won a year and this is 1.6 times higher than that of coastal shipping and 2.3 times more than that of rail transportations. The results of the empirical study imply that these results that if we change the transport mode from the inland trucking to coastal shipping or rail transport, we can save 162~247 billion-won of social costs per year.
