단행본 『회텬긔담(회천기담, 回天綺談)』의 번역 대본 및 한국적 변용 양상 연구 = A Comparitive Study on the Political Novel Hoe-Cheon-Ki-Dam and its Original Work

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 1908년에 한국 역자 현공렴(玄公廉)에 의해 번역, 출판된 단행본 정치소설 『회텬긔담(回天綺談)』을 연구 대상으로 삼는다. 한국 측 『회텬긔담』 원본 자료의 발굴과 더불어 그 동안 동아시아 각국에서 유행했던 『회텬긔담』의 판본들 간의 비교를 통해 한국어판 『회텬긔담』의 번역 대본이 바로 중국 역자 옥슬재주인의 『회천기담』이라는 것을 확인했다. 하지만 현공렴 주체적인 번역 태도 아래 이루어진 『회텬긔담』의 번역본은 중국어 저본에 비해 서구 역사, 지리, 철학 등 지식을 전달해주는 디테일과 연애담론을 비롯한 소설의 통속적 속성에 대해서 경개역과 삭제를 통해 상당히 많이 압축시켰다. 이와 동시에 소설의 정치적 속성에 대해 원문의 내용을 최대한으로 보존하는 경향이 여러 군데 발견되고 중요하다고 판단되는 부분에 와서는 원문에 없는 부분에 대한 역자 현공렴의 추가 설명도 적지 않게 존재하고 있다. 소설 연애담론을 비롯한 오락적 속성과 지식 공유적 속성을 대폭 축소시키고 정치적 속성만 살려두며 민지의 계몽과 애국 사상의 선전에만 집중되어 있는 이 소설은 ‘정치소설’이라는 ‘뼈대’와 ‘심장’만 받아들이고 원본의 서사가 겨우 흔적만 앙상하게 남게 된 채 번역되었다는 것은 망국의 위기에 처해 유한의 자원을 가장 효율적으로 배치할 수밖에 없었던 당시 한말 번역가 및 지식인들의 곤경을 잘 설명해 주고 있다. 하지만 이런 곤경에 직면했을 때 『회텬긔담』에서 보여 준 것처럼 공리성과 효용성을 강조하는 번역 책략을 내세워 서구 근대 사상과 문물을 효율적으로 받아들이려 시도했던 번역가를 비롯한 지식인들이 있기 때문에 한국의 문학은 고대문학과 근대문학을 연결해주는 계몽주의시기의 문학사가 많고, 빛나는 지적 유산으로 장식될 수 있었던 것이다. 한편 『회텬긔담』의 중국어 및 한국어 번역 텍스트에 대한 고찰을 통해 우리는 당시 동아시아 삼국이 근대화 과정에서 문학 분야의 교섭이 상당히 활발하게 이루어졌다는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 동아시아적 시각에서 이 시기의 번역 문학의 역사를 한층 더 면밀하게 검토, 연구하는 작업이 필요하다고 생각한다. 이는 추후의 과제로 남겨둔다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis is to study on the relationship between the Korean political novel Hoe-Cheon-Ki-Dam(회텬긔담) written by Hyeon Gong-nyeom(玄 公廉) in 1908 which was the typical work during the Period of Patriotic Enlightenment(1905～1910), and the Chinese political novel Huitianqitan(回天綺談) which was written in the Late Qing Dynasty. In this thesis, after a positive text analysis, it is proved that the Korean political novel Hoe-Cheon-Ki-Dam which is discovered by the authur of this thesis for the first time, is an adaptation work of the Chinese-version political novel Huitianqitan. and the Japanese novel Eikokumeisikoktenkidan(英國名士回天綺談) written by Kato Masanoskey(加藤政之助) in 1883 is proved to be the original work of Hoe-Cheon-Ki-Dam and Huitianqitan. Eikokumeisikoktenkidan had not only caused a great repercussion in Japan, but also in its Neighboring countries China and Korea. Hyeon Gong-nyeom's adaptation work has a great political tendency to the constitutional monarchy and a strong will on the enlightment of the Korean people. And through his translation, the entertaining founction and knowledge-popularizing function of Hoe-Cheon-Ki-Dam has been substantially reduced, while the political founction has been considerably intensified at the same time. Through this study, we can notice that there has been a very active communication among Korea, China and Japan during the early period of modernazation, espacially in the field of translingual practice. It is why figuring out Korea, China and Japan's history of translated literature under the East-asian perspective is so important and necessary for the expansion of East-asian studies.
