본 논문은 19세기 미국의 조류학자이자 화가인 존 제임스 오듀본의 저술을 연대기순으로 점검하면서 생태비평 계보에서 차지하는 오듀본의 위상을 그의 미국적 성격을 모색과 연관지어 분석한다. 오듀본은 탐험을 통해 획득한 미국적 자연의 실체를 무미건조하게 전달하기보다 흥미를 자극하는 대화적 수사를 활용하여 자연환경 전반에 관한 독자의 관심을 환기시킨다. 이런 전략적 글쓰기는 사냥을 비롯한 인간의 활동이 생태환경에 미치는 영향에 관해 의식하면서 사라질 것으로 예상되는 미국의 야생자연 변화상을 사실적으로 기록하여 미국적 자연의 가치를 고양하는 효과를 자아낸다. 이를 통해, 그는 인간이 문명화의 사명을 안고 야생자연에 들어가 보존과 개발 사이에서 갈등 상황에 처할 때 어떤 입장을 취해야 할지에 관한 생태적 사유의 핵심 의제를 건드린다. 특히 그의 후기 저술은 자연물상을 심미적으로 대상화하는 것에 머물지 않고 자연 질서에 관한 심층적 이해를 지향하는 생태비평적 의의를 내비친다. 이와 같이, 오듀본의 저술은 생태적 사실, 여행과 탐험, 자연 감상 및 법칙에 관한 감상과 묵상 등 쏘로우 이전의 다양한 문학 유형을 매력적으로 혼합하였다는 점에서 미국적 자연기의 원형서사라는 위상을 지닌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the ecocritical implications of John James Audubon in the genealogy of American nature writing. The quest for Audubon’s multiple American identities brings forth a heap of comprehensive looks on the American nature: the scientific investigation of wilderness, the commercialization of the unknown nature, the vanishing pristine natural scenes, and the plea for natural habitat preservation. Scientist Audubon incorporates each natural object into his scientific classification system, assigning an American value to it. Artist Audubon captures the truth of the American nature with minute fidelity. Writer Audubon recalls the American reading public quite a lot in his works for the purpose of drawing their sensational interest by dramatically depicting the animals’ mating and hunting with excessive details. Audubon the ecocritic points out the infiltration of civilization into the wilderness, feeling concern about the disappearing American nature palpable with life, and finally showing the recognition of an ecosystem’s complexity.
