칠십인역 영어 번역 NETS = The Septuagint and NETS

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 글에서는 칠십인역의 영어 번역인 ‘새영어칠십인역번역(NETS)’의 번역 정책과 번역 방법, 번역 대본 등을 검토한다. 칠십인역은 이중 번역이다. 이중 번역을 할 때 발생하는 문제는 번역 대상의 원문을 어느 정도 고려하느냐이다. 칠십인역을 현대어로 번역할 때는 히브리어 성경을 어디까지 참고해야 하는가의 문제가 된다. 칠십인역을 현대어로 번역할 때 가장 많이 논의되는 주제는 상류 vs. 하류 논쟁이다. 히브리어 성경에 무게 중심을 두는 태도를 상류 관점이라고 한다. 반면, 칠십인역에 힘을 실어 주는 태도는 하류 관점이라고 한다. 하류 관점은 칠십인역이 비록 번역이기는 하지만, 번역된 후 자율적이고 권위 있는 하나님의 말씀으로 받아들여졌다는 전제 위에 있다. 상류 관점에 의하면 도착 언어인 칠십인역이 출발 언어인 히브리어 성경에 종속된다고 한다. 따라서 히브리어 성경이 칠십인역의 의미를 결정하는 심판자라고 한다. 칠십인역을 불어로 번역한 [알렉산드리아 성경]은 하류 관점을 취하는 반면, [NETS]는 상류 관점을 택한다. 교회사에서는 헬라어가 신적 영감을 받았다는 ‘헬라어 진리’(veritas graeca) 시대와 히브리어가 하나님의 계시를 나타낸다는 ‘히브리어 진리’(veritas hebraica) 시대가 번갈아 한 번씩 있었다. 편역자의 의도가 있는지 알 수 없지만, [알렉산드리아 성경]은 ‘헬라어 진리’ 진영에 속하고 [NETS]는 ‘히브리어 진리’ 계보를 잇는다. 칠십인역 우리말 번역 작업의 출발은 상류와 하류 논의를 기반으로 칠십인경이냐 칠십인역이냐 문제에서 시작한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article reviewed information and discussion on NETS's translation policy, translation method, translation vorlage, etc., which is an English translation of the Septuagint. The Septuagint is a double translation. The problem with double translation is to what extent the original text of the translation should be considered. When translating the Septuagint into modern language, the question arises how far the Hebrew Bible should be referred to. The attitude of placing the gravity in the Hebrew Bible is called the upstream view. On the other hand, the attitude of empowering the character of the Septuagint is said to be a downstream view. The upstream point of view is that the Septuagint, the arrival language, is subordinate to the Hebrew Bible, the starting language. Therefore, Hebrew Bible is said to be the judge who determines the meaning of the Septuagint. The downstream point of view is that the Septuagint, although it is translations, are autonomous and independent text after it have been translated. Translated into French, the "Alexandria Bible" takes a downstream view, while NETS takes an upstream view. The most talked-about topic when translating the Septuagint into modern language is the upstream vs. downstream debate. Such discussions need to be dealt with seriously to prepare for the translation of the Korean language of the Septuagint.
