      Many commercial semi-permanent eyebrow cosmetics differ in guaranteed durability versus durability observed during practical use. The current study tests the impact of adjusting pH levels using citric acid and sodium citrate on the length of time the colorant of eyebrow cosmetics will persist. Experimental samples were developed at three different pH levels, 5.0 (A), 4.0 (B), and 3.0 (C) and distributed to 30 healthy, non-pregnant Korean women aged 25-39 years. The semi-permanent eyebrow samples were applied 3 times to the volunteer’s right upper arm (size; 2×2 cm) using a color cosmetics brush. Changes in the colorant were monitored for seven days using a spectrum colorimeter. Results of the colorimeter study find that sample B and sample C had the greatest long-lasting effect, indicating that alteration of pH is effective at enhancing durability. These findings suggest that adjustment of pH provides a new methodology to improve the durability, quality and technological preparation process of semipermanent eyebrow cosmetics.
