토마스 아퀴나스의 보편적 질료 -형상론 비판의 발전 과정 = Development of Thomas Aquinas’s Critical Arguments against Universal Hylomorphism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 토마스 아퀴나스의 보편적 질료-형상론 비판의 전개와 발전 과정을 이해하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 『존재자와 본질에 관하여』으로부터 『분리된 실체들에 관하여』에 이르는 토마스의 주요 작품에 등장하는 보편적 질료-형상론 비판으로부터 공통적으로 확인할 수 있는 논의의 틀과 함께, 각 저작에 등장하는 논의들에서 드러나는 특징들을 확인하게 될 것이다.
이 과정에서 본 논문은 토마스 아퀴나스가 알베르투스, 대학총장 필리푸스와 산토 카로의 후고로부터 계승한 논의들을 검토할 것이다. 특히 우리는 양적 분할에 의거한 비판을 그가 보편적 질료-형상론을 공격하는 가장 치명적인 비판적 논의로서 조명하게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 토마스는 이 비판적 논의들을 활용하여 보편적 질료-형상론의 형이상학적 기반을 흔드는 것으로부터, 이 이론을 엠페도클레스에 뿌리를 둔 유물론 전통의 사상으로 몰아가려는 그의 의도를 정당화하기에 이르기 때문이다. 그리고 결론부에서는 13세기 후반 보편적 질료-형상론의 급격한 쇠락세와 운명을 토마스에 대한 1277년 단죄와 연관 속에서 보편적 질료-형상론자들의 반격과 그들의 빛바랜 승리 등을 통해 간략하게 살펴볼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to investigate Thomas Aquinas’s critique against the universal hylomorphism of the Middle Ages. For this goal, while tracing Thomas’s critical arguments from De ente et essentia to De substantiis separatis, we will elucidate the leitmotif of Thomas’s critique against universal hylomorphism, and explore the characteristics of his critical arguments in accordance with his firm intention to refute the theory in question. We will then concentrate on the arguments indebted to Philippe the Chancellor, Hugh of St.-Cher, and Albert the Great. Especially we will cast light on his critical argument based on his conception of quantitative division as hismost technical and crucialmeasure against universal hylomorphism. It is because Thomas uses this argument not just to undermine the metaphysical foundation of universal hylomorphism, but also to justify his intention to reduce this theory to the materialist tradition originated fromEmpedocles. As a concluding remark, I will review the repercussions of the proponents of universal hylomorphismand the dramatic decline of this theory, relative to the Parisian Condemnation of 1277 bywhich the proponents of this theory have won their last, but still arguable victory over Thomas Aquinas.
