루이스 하인 사진이 사회변화에 끼친 영향력에 대한 연구 -아동노동 사진을 중심으로- = A Study on Social Influence of the Lewis W. Hine`s Child Labor Photographs

In the early 20th century the United States rapidly developed into a Industrial Capitalism system and it took cheap labor as the starting point to expand it`s reproduction. The poor children deprived of their own future opportunities had to work all day in the workplace. The number of working children called `Child slaves` between ten to fifteen increased 2 million by 1900. The social contradictions caused vicious circle of ignorance and poverty, and lack of training of future generations. Lewis Wickes Hine(1894∼1940) thought of the photography as a powerful weapon for social reform. Each picture with its detailed caption was irrefutable social testimony. He tried various photographic forms and completed efficient means of message communication, photostory and photomontage. His photographs uncovered the social contradictions of American capitalism and they led to legislation to ban child labor under 16 years old. Photographs are the product of social relations like all the results of human labor. Documentary photographs are being produced in a specific historical context and social situation, and they have a close relationship to social condition. America`s child labor law in 1916 was the result of the objective conditions required for social change and human efforts which made the possibility of change into reality.
