      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to describe a cognitive comparative analysis on adverbs regarding COMPLETENESS: absolutely, completely, perfectly, totally, and definitely in English and wancen in Korean. By comparing those words in both languages to better understand them, we identify the grammaticalization development in those adverbs. Basically, the adverbs in question are used as an intensifier and stand alone as a discourse marker in interactive spoken discourse. In addition, the speaker’s stance is marked on those items. Diachronically, the process of change in those adverbs is well described in terms of grammaticalization principles. Corpora are used to describe the synchronic usage of those listed adverbs. As a discourse marker, they are employed mostly in spoken domains in order to indicate the speaker’s affirmative response to the previous speaker’s intended meaning. Looking through the two languages’ adverbs in question, we conclude that the Source Determination Principle is captured in those English and Korean adverbs’ grammaticalization trajectory to move in the same direction of change.
