The aim of this study is to provide Environmental Plans decreasing Fear of Crime by feeling the necessity of improvement of Environmental Plans in subway station, based on Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design(CPTED) principles.
To that end, this study adopted understanding the current situation method by literature investigation, field survey and questionnaire.
The findings of this study are as follows:
First, it was found that the main type of the fear of 6 serious crime occurred in subway stations was sexual offence, which were mainly ranked high particularly among female respondents in comparison with male, those in their 30s.
Second, It was toilet the place of the highest Fear of Crime among other 6 places(Subway external Entrance, platform entry stairs, Transfer Passageway, toilet, ticket office, platform) in subway stations.
The Fear of Crime for women were higher than that for men in every subway spaces, and 50s was lower than other age groups in toilet.
Third, It was investigated for Fear of Crime each space by user’s characteristics and Environmental Plan factors as follows.
This study show that The Fear of Crime was the highest in the external connection entrance caused by a lack of CCTV installation quantity, and blind spot was the highest Fear of Crime in platform entrance stairs and Transfer passage way, and tightness of people was the highest Fear of Crime in the box office and platform.
If I look for each station, Access control and secure of moving line are important factors in Jamsil and Cheonho Station which is areas of high floating population density, and minimize blind area and natural surveillance are important factors in Sinseol-dong and Ogeum Station which is areas of low floating population density.
Particularly, Fear of Crime was presented that older Jamsil and Sinseol-dong Station were higer than founding Cheonho and Ogeum Station at mostly Environmental Plan factors.
That is, This reuslt show that floating population density and deterioration significantly affect Environmental Plan factors for decreasing Fear of Crime.
If I look for each age, Fear of Crime rate ranked high particularly among female respondents in comparison with male, those in their 30s in every spaces.
Fourth, It was necessary to improve Environmental Plan preventing Fear of Crime in subway station through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design(CPTED) principles
Explain concretely, This Environmental Plans are the access-control at exterior entrances, the surveillance in platform entrance stairs and transfer passageway and toilet, the supplement of enhancing area in ticket office and platform.
Collectively, This study means that Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design(CPTED) principles was applied each spaces in subway station to improve Environmental Plan factors and provide baseline data for preventing crime and decreasing Fear of Crime.
