In this article, we shall analyze Atsushi Nakajima’s literary works featuring Chosen, Manchuria, and the South Sea Islands, tracing the transitions of Nakajima’s recognition of the Colonialism. Firstly, “Junsa-no Iru Fukei (巡査の居る風景)” describes, with a tense mood, the scenes where the Chosen people, who were ruled during the colonial period, experienced the confusions and contradictions concerning their identities, had the hidden intention for the independence of Chosen, and suffered from the violence of the Imperial Japan. Secondly, “D-shi Shichigatsu Jokei (D市七月叙景 (一)),” a literary work of Manchuria, dramatically contrasts the Japanese residents with the Chinese laborers with reference to the South Manchuria Railway. In this piece of work, we find the criticism of the Colonialism of the Imperial Japan, which was based on the sacrifice of the other tribes. The author, however, did not shed light on the substantial aspects of the Chinese people; it appears that the author wrote this work in the lights of his thoughts on both Japan and China, rather than from the perspective specifically relating to China. Thirdly, “Fubutsu Shou (風物抄)” describes, with an exotic mood, the natural landscape of the South Sea islands as well as the life of the native people there. At the heart of this work, however, lies Nakajima’s recognition of the South Sea area as an uncivilized region, contrasted with Japan, a modernized country in his view. Through the systematic analyses of these three literary works, we conclude that as the theme of Nakajima’s works changed from Chosen, Manchuria, to the South Sea Island, his recognition of the colonialism also changed from his support to the local people’s opposition to the Imperial Japan’s colonialism, his neutral position as to the issue, to his biased view on the South Sea area as an uncivilized region.

本稿は中島敦が朝鮮․満州․南洋群島を舞台に書いた作品の分析を通して、彼の植民地主義に対する認識の変遷を辿ったものである。まず朝鮮を舞台にした「巡査の居る風景」には、植民地支配状況の中で被支配者である朝鮮人が経験する自己アイデンティティーの混乱と矛盾や、朝鮮の独立に対する秘められた意志、そして帝国日本の暴力によって犠牲となった被支配民族の受難の模様などが描かれている。次に満州を舞台した「D市七月叙景(一)」には、南満州鉄道の存在を意識しながら、日本人居留民と中国人労働者の日常が劇的に対比されており、基本的には異民族の犠牲の上に成り立っている帝国日本の植民地主義に対する批判が読み取れる。ただし、作家の眼差しが中国人の内面深いところまで行き届いておらず、やや中間者的な立ち位置をとっているきらいがある。最後に、南洋群島を舞台した「風物抄」では、南洋群島の自然風景と共にそこで出会った様々な原住民たちの生活像が異国情緒をもって描かれている。しかし、このような作品における表象の根底には、西欧化された日本を文明とし南洋群島を未開とする作家中島敦の南洋地域に対する認識が見え隠れする。このように中島敦文学における植民地主義に対する認識は、朝鮮から満州を経て南洋群島へと移動するにつれて、当地の異民族もしくは原住民に対する帝国日本の植民地主義への抵抗への支持から、中間者的な立場へと、さらに未開という偏見的な眼差しへと変遷したといえる。
