방인근 소설 「괴청년」의 검열과 서사 복원 = The Censorship and Narrative Restoration of the Novel “the mysterious young man” near the Bang In-geun

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 1931년 10월 8일부터 같은 달 27일까지 『동아일보』에 연재된 방인근의 「괴청년」이라는 작품을 대상으로 일제강점기 총독부의 검열에 의해 행정처분을 당한 소설의 본래적 의미와 통제의 양상을 살펴보았다. 방인근의 「괴청년」은 1931년에 신문에 연재될 당시 19회가 삭제 조치를 당했고, 이후 연재가 중단되었다. 또한 1934년에 단행본으로 출간 시도되었을 때, 출판 금지조치를 당하여 이중 검열의 피해 작품이 되었다. 본고가 살펴본 결과 방인근은 1920년대에는 주로 순문예 작품들을 중심으로 중단편 소설을 발표하였으나 1930년대에 들어 신문에 통속적인 대중소설들을 본격적으로 게재하여 대표적인 대중 작가가 되었다. 소설 「괴청년」은 작가적 변화의 과도기적인 시기에 발표된 작품으로 검열에 의해 많은 의미가 훼손된 사례에 해당한다. 본고가 분석한 결과 1934년 『조선출판경찰월보』에 기록된 이 작품의 단행본 검열 사유는 사회주의와 아나키즘적 시각, 반체제 테러 등의 내용이 문제가 되었던 것으로 보이며, 이 내용 가운데에는 1931년 『동아일보』에 연재되지 못하고 삭제 조치된 서사도 담겨있는 것으로 확인되었다. 본고는 이 검열의 내용을 바탕으로 연재본에서 삭제와 연재 중단 조치된 서사는 무엇인지를 추론해보았고, 복원된 서사에는 방인근이 연재 시기 이후 범죄 탐정소설로 발전해가는 서사적 트릭의 일부는 물론 시대적인 비판의식을 담아내는 시각도 풍부하게 담겨있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그렇기에 「괴청년」은 방인근 문학 연구에 있어서 작가의 관점과 창작 태도, 서사 전략의 전환점이 되는 작품이 될 수 있다고 생각한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article examined the original meaning and control aspects of the novel conducted by the censorship of the Governor-General of Japanese colonial era, targeting the work of Bang In-geun, the mysterious young man, which was serialized in the < Dong-A Ilbo > from October 8, 1931, to the 27th of the same month. Bang In-geun's the Mysterious young man was deleted 19 times when it was serialized in a newspaper in 1931, and the series was later suspended. In addition, when it was attempted to be published as a book in 1934, it was banned from publication and became a victim of double censorship. As a result of this paper's consideration, Bang In-geun published a novel focusing on pure literary works in the 1920s, but in the 1930s, he became a representative public writer as he published popular novels in newspapers in earnest. The novel the Mysterious young man was published in a transitional period of writer-based change and corresponds to an example in which much of its meaning was damaged by censorship. As a result of this paper's analysis, the reasons for censorship of books contained in the < Joseon Publication Police Monthly Report > in 1934 seem to have been problematic with the contents of socialism, an anarchism perspective, and anti-establishment terrorism, among which it was confirmed that the narrative was deleted without being serialized in the < Dong-A Ilbo > in 1931. Based on this censorship, this article identified which narratives were deleted and discontinued, and confirmed that the restored narrative included some narrative tricks that Bang In-geun developed into a detective fiction after the serialization period. Therefore, I believe that the mysterious young man can be a turning point in the author's perspective, creative attitude, and narrative strategy in the study of Bang In-geun literature.
