실체이원론과 김재권의 짝짓기 문제 = Substance Dualism and Kim’s Pairing Problem

The purpose of this paper is to critically examine and evaluate Jaegwon Kim’s argument against Cartesian substance dualism. In Physicalism, or Something Near Enough, Kim argues that an immaterial soul cannot causally interact with anything, whether it is a material thing or another soul, because souls are not located in space. This is what is called “the pairing problem” or “the pairing argument.” This argument has been criticized on the ground that it implicitly presupposes reductionism about causation. However, in support of Kim, I argue that his pairing argument does not depend on reductionism in any obvious way. And I suggest one possible way of solving the pairing problem.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 데카르트적 실체이원론을 반박하는 김재권의 짝짓기 논증을 비판적으로 고찰하고 평가하는 것이다. 김재권은 그의 저서 『물리주의』에서 데카르트의 실체이원론이 가정하는 비물리적 실체인 영혼(마음)은 전적으로 공간성을 결여하기 때문에 그 어떤 것과도 인과 관계를 맺을 수 없다는 논증을 제시한다. 이른 바, “짝짓기 문제” 또는 “짝짓기 논증”이다. 필자는 본 논문에서 짝짓기 논증이 성립하기 위해 김재권이 가정하고 있는 암묵적 가정들을 면밀히 분석하고, 인과에 관한 비환원주의적 입장에 의해 짝짓기 문제를 해결하려는 전략을 비판한다. 또한 실체이원론자의 입장에서 짝짓기 논증을 반박할 수 있는 한 가지 가능한 대안을 제시한다.
