사회과 수업과 문학의 통합 = Integrating Literature into Social Studies Instruction

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회과 수업과 문학의 통합적 접근에 대한 관심이 국어 교육 및 사회 교육분야에서 높아지고 있다. 이러한 접근을 지지하는 학자들은 사회과 수업과 문학의 통합이 사회과 학습 뿐 아니라 읽기 교육에도 효과적이라고 주장한다. 본 연구는 사회과 수업과 문학의 통합적 접근의 효과에 대한 연구물들을 분석하여 그 효과를 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위해 데이터에 근거한 총 15개의 연구물들이 선정되었다. 분석을 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회 수업을 위한 문학작품의 활용은 학습자가 사회과에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 갖게 하는 데 도움이 된다. 둘째, 사회과 학습을 위해 다양한 문학작품을 읽음으로써, 학습자가 사회과 개념을 보다 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있으며, 다양한 관점을 개발할 수 있도록 도와준다. 셋째, 사회과 수업과 문학의 통합적 접근은 학습자의 비판적 사고력 및 비판적 읽기 능력을 기르는 데 효과적이다. 넷째, 문학을 통한 사회과 수업과 읽기 학습이 통합될 때 학습자들은 사회과 내용을 학습하기 위해 읽기를 즐겁게 하였다. 대부분의 연구물들이 사회과 수업과 문학의 통합적 접근에 대한 긍정적인 효과를 보고하였다. 그러나 그 결과를 일반화하는데 신중을 기해야 할 것이다. 또한 몇몇 연구들은 사회과 학습과 문학을 통합하여 활용하는 것만으로 사회과 학습 및 읽기 학습을 강화하지 못할 수 있음을 보고하였다. 이러한 결과는 통합적 접근의 효과에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다양한 요인들을 함께 연구해야 함을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Interest in integrating literature into social studies instruction has been increasing in both the literacy field and the social studies field because literature-based social studies might enhance students attitude toward reading to learn and social studies learning. This article is a review of fifteen studies on the effects of integrating literature into social studies, which include published studies found in journal articles and unpublished studies indexed in Dissertation Abstracts. Findings indicated that; (1) Integrating literature into social studies seems to promote positive attitudes toward social studies; (2) Integrating literature into social studies may enhance social studies learning (understanding of social studies concepts, multiple perspectives, and critical thinking); and (3) When literature is integrated in social studies instruction, students tend to enjoy reading to learn the content. Even though many studies found positive effects of integrating literature into social studies on attitude, social studies learning, and literacy(reading) development, one should be cautious about making generalizations. Some studies noted that just integrating literature into social studies was not enough to promote social studies learning and critical reading. Thus, this review suggests that more empirical studies on this approach are needed. Implication for instruction practice and future research are also suggested.
