Doctor Johnson said the last line of the foregoing stanza has no equal in our language; he thought it, perhaps, unnecessary to suggest that its philosophy was for all people and all wholesome policy. In the face of this conviction, which none who know how to think can affect to gainsay, it is strange that, in these days of prevailing progress, the premier pas of political, scientific, and social action has to be taken when it should have passed the goal. Still, "better late than never;" and it is pleasant to premise that one of the subtlest evils which ever beset our boon national sports has been blotted from that goodly system--let us hope, "for good and all"--contemporary with this reference to it.
