The current study aims to examine the aspects of Hiyoshi(Sanno) Gongen(日吉権現) in Gunkimonogatari(軍記物語) by thoroughly reviewing each of the original articles related to Hiyoshi Gongen in The Tale of the Heike(平家物語) of the Kakuichi-bon Text(覚一本) and Gempeijosuiki(源平盛衰記). Specifically, the description and the role of Hiyoshi Gongen in Gunkimonogatari were evaluated.
In volume 3 of The Tale of the Heike of the Kakuichi-bon Text, Hiyoshi Gongen was worshipped praying for the birth of a prince, later known as Emperor Horikawa. Also, the divine authority of Hiyoshi Gongen as the guardian deity of the Lotus Sutra (法華経) was depicted. Furthermore, Sanno was not only the object of Go-Shirakawa's visit in scroll 4, but was also the first deity that the people of Sanmon had in mind when they visited various shrines after the emperor's abdication. In addition, in the scene in scroll 7, Sanno Gongen was represented by a song, but for the declining Heike clan, Sanno Gongen was an object to beg for mercy.
In volume 4 of Gempeijosuiki, a supernatural tale of Hiyoshi's miraculous powers was inserted which gives us an insight into the divine authority of Hiyoshi Gongen as a god with great spiritual power. In the Sanno Suijaku tale, Sanno Gongen descended to Shikinokami-gun in Yamato Province as the deity of Omiwa, and it was written that Sanno's true origin was Shakyamuni. In addition, in the general commentary on Sanno Suijaku, Hiyoshi-taisha Shrine was described as the guardian deity of the Tendai sect and the god of protection of the royal castle.
