The impact properties of coating was studied using instrumented impact tester. The previously derived fracture analysis was used to get the in-situ coating toughness (Gc) with various baking times under impact loading. The Gc was decreased as baking (drying) time was increased for the solvent evaporation type coating used in this study. A rapid decrease in Gc was observed at short drying times. The Gc value approached a constant value at long baking times that was independent of coating thickness. Coated polymeric substrate showed surface embrittlement after the coating dried sufficiently. The surface embrittlement condition and embrittlement toughness upon impact loading was studied. Critical strain energy release rate at embrittlement was a function of impact energy and coating thickness.
