The Modernity of Melancholy in T. S. Eliot’s “Burnt Norton”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

아리스토텔레스 이후로부터 중세를 거쳐 현대에 이르기까지 다양한 사회/문화적 관점에서연구되어 온멜랑콜리는 병적인 증후로써 뿐만 아니라, 시간, 역사, 그리고 상실의 인식과 같은 모더니즘적인 요소들을 가리키는 문화적 지표로 정의되어왔다. 멜랑콜리의 문화사적 개념 속에는 시간의 문제가 매우 밀접하게 연관되어 나타나는데, 모더니즘시기에 이러한 시간과 역사의 개념은 20세기의 새로운 인식론적 패러다임에 의해 획기적인 변화를 겪게 된다. 모더니즘 시기의 멜랑콜리와 연계된 시간과 역사의 새로운 관점에서 볼 때, 엘리엇의 대표작인 『사중주』(Four Quartets) 는 모더니즘에 깊숙히 내재되어 있는 문화적 감성을 가리키는 징후로 읽혀질 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서, 엘리엇은 『사중주』를 통해 역사의 차원에서
제기되는 멜랑콜리의 문제를 제기하고, 확장하며 발전시켜 나가고 있다. 특히, 역사에 관한한, 인간은 통상적으로 기대되는 것처럼 객관적인 인식을 확보하는 것이 불가능한데, 그것은 역사가 있는 그대로의 역사가 아니라, 인간이 기대하는 것으로써의 역사이기 때문이다. 다시 말해, 절대적인 대상으로써의 역사와 그것의 인식 사이에는 좁힐 수 없는 인식론적인 차이가 존재한다. 엘리엇에 따르면, 인간이 경험하는 모든 것은 사실상 있는 그대로의 실재가 아니라, 인간이 그렇게 되기를 원하는 바에 대한 표상으로써 인식하는 것이라고 한다. 그렇기 때문에, 역사를 절대적으로 객관적인 관점에서 고찰하는것은 불가능하다는 것이다. 이러한 인간조건의 본질적인 한계가 멜랑콜리적인 인식을 야기한다. 이런 관점에서, 『사중주』의 제1부에 해당하는 「번트 노튼」(“Burnt Norton”)은 객관적인 역사의 의미와 그것을 인식하는데서 드러나는 인간의 제한적인 인식론적 조건, 그리고 그 둘 사이에 놓여있는 좁힐 수 없는 간극을 전통적인 선형적 시간관을 거부하는 순환적 시간관을 통해 보여주고 있다. 더 나아가, 이 시는 도시화의 과정이 모더니즘 시기에 시간의 개념이 변화하게 되는 과정과 밀접하게 연관되어 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 맥락에서, 「번트 노튼」은 멜랑콜리의 메카니즘이 현대세계의 파편적이고 불완전한 측면을 보여줄 뿐만 아니라, 실제 존재하지 않는 것이 야기하는 멜랑콜리적 인식에 대한 의문을 던지고 있다고 할 수 있겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Melancholy has been defined not only as a morbid symptom but also as a cultural indication that shows the elements of modernism such as time, history, and the sense of loss. In modernism, the conventional concepts of time and history was modified by the new recognition of time. Along with this new recognition of time and history, Eliot’s Four Quartets can be read as a symptomatic indication of melancholy deeply embedded in modernism as a cultural feeling. In this vein, Eliot expands, develops, and presents the problems of melancholy on the level of history in Four Quartets. As for history, we cannot get an absolutely objective idea of history as we usually presume. Rather, history is only what we thought it to be. There is an unbridgeable gap between absolute history and our recognition of it. According to Eliot, everything we experience is not what it is but only what we want them to be. It is impossible to view history from an absolutely objective perspective. This intrinsic limitation of human condition causes melancholy. “Burnt Norton” shows this unbridgeable gap between the ideal portrait of history and the reality of human condition by suggesting an idea of circular time that resists the conventional concept of linear time. Furthermore, the poem shows the urbanization is closely related with the transition of the concept of time in modernism. Within this context, the poem shows that the mechanism of melancholy not only indicates the incomplete and fragmentary aspect of the world but also raises a question of what does not exist.
