The topshell(Turbo cornutus Solander) is a common herbivorous marine gastropod, distribute in South sea and Jeju coastal areas in Korea. The meat value on human food and the empty shells are utilized in the manufacture of the furniture. Therefore, the topshells are very important commercial shell-fish. For the seedling production and propagation of the topshell, the experiment was carried out at Marine Biological Station, Jeju University, from July 11st 1977 to September 8th 1977.
1. The shell lengths of topshells used for the experiment were 5.29∼5.75cm and water temperature during the experimental period was ranged between 23.0∼26.7℃.
2. A study on the feed of the topshell has been made by feeding with 2 species of brown algae(Eoklonia cava, Sargassum sp.) 1 species of green algae(Ulva pertusa) 1 species of red algae(Galaxaura fastigiata)
3. When a mixed feed(4 species) was given to the topshell, this was superior(2.09%) than the other feel in the daily rate of feeding, when each feed was given alone, the green algae(U. pertusa) was significantly high(1.67%)
4. The highest value was obtained in the rate of shell width increase was Ecklonia cava(12.34%), in the rate of total weight increase was mixed feed(7.57%), and Sargassum sp. was unsuitable for feed of the topshell.
5. Mixed feed and Ulva pertusa were the most suitable feeds for the topshell in respect to it's growth and the efficaiency of food conversion.
6. When the mixed feed given, Ulva pertusa was superior in selectivity of feed(41.5%)
7. The feeding coefficient of mixed feed was most lower(12.66) than the other feeds and the highest value was obtained in Sargassum sp. (41.75)
8. The feeding habits of the topshells were more or less difference with the water depths.
