일본의 근대 고등교육 제도와 여자미술교육 －죠시미술전문학교를 통해 본 일본 근대 여자미술교육의 사회적 기능－

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 일본의 근대적 고등교육체계의 한 축을 이루는 전문학교와 사립학교라는 교육제도를 통해 구축된 일본 근대 여자미술교육의 사회적 기능을 죠시미술전문학교를 통해 살펴보고자 하는 데 있다. 죠시미술전문학교는 시리츠죠시미술학교에 기원을 두고 있었다. 소수의 남자 학생들을 받아들여 미술전문학교가 운영되던 메이지 시대 말기에 여자들에게도 남자들과 동등한 미술 전문교육의 기회와 장을 여자들에게도 제공하고자 출현한 학교이자 일본에서 최초로 근대적 여자미술전문교육기관으로 문을 연 학교가 시리츠죠시미술학교이다. 시리츠죠시미술학교는 후에, 죠시미술전문학교로 승격되어 일본의 고등교육체계에 본격적으로 진입하게 된다. 그러나 전문학교로 승격되기 전부터 죠시미술전문학교에서는 일본의 근대 고등교육체계에서 요구하는 전문학교의 자격요건과 사회적 기능을 충족하고자 하는 노력을 끊임없이 시도하였다. 죠시미술전문학교는 시리츠죠시미술학교 시절, 기예미술교육에 중점을 두고 당시, 더욱 증폭되는 일본의 근대화 프로젝트에 부응하는 미술적 기능을 갖춘 전문 기술가를 배출해가며 전문학교로의 승격을 도모하는 모습을 보여주었다. 여자전문학교로 승격한 이후, 죠시미술전문학교는 일본의 근대 고등교육체계가 부여하는 운영상의 특전을 최대로 활용해가며 여자미술교육의 사회적 기능을 보다 확장해나간다. 이를 통해 이 학교는 사회가 요구하는 미술교원 양성학교로서의 입지와 위상을 구축해가며 여자들을 위한 미술전문학교로서의 면모를 새롭게 보여주기까지 한다. 그 결과 죠시미술전문학교를 통해 시행된 여자미술교육은 일본을 포함하여 동아시아의 근대적 여자미술교육의 전형을 제시해 주게 되는 것이다.
따라서 이 글에서는 일본에서 여자미술교육이 근대 고등교육체계와 전문교육을 통해 여자미술교육의 사회적 기능과 역할을 제도적으로 구축하고 형성해 가는 과정을 죠시미술전문학교를 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 당시의 여자미술 담론들과 교원 자격 제도 등을 둘러싼 사회적, 시대적 요인들이 근대 여자미술교육의 사회적 기능과 모범을 자극하고 형상화하는 주요한 동력이자 계기로 자리하고 있었음을 밝혀보고자 한 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

At the end of the Meiji Era, only a small number of men were admitted to art school in Japan. Meanwhile Women’s Art School in Tokyo opened to provide women with the opportunity and venue for specialized art education for the first time in Japan. After that, Women"s Art School was promoted to women"s vocational school and entered the Japanese higher education system. However, even before being promoted to a vocational school, Women"s Art School have constantly tried to satisfy the qualifications and social functions of vocational school required by Japanese modern higher education system. In the early days of the school, Women’s Art School was operated with an emphasis on craft arts, and through this, it schemed the promotion to a vocational school by cultivating professional technicians with artistic skills to respond to the Japanese modernization project that was further amplified at that time. After being promoted to a women"s vocational school, by maximizing the privileges granted by Japanese modern higher education system, and further expanding the social functions of women"s art education, it has established its position and status as an art teacher training school required by society. It even shows a new aspect as the art school for women. As a result, art education for women implemented through Women"s Art School presented a model of modern art education for women in East Asia, including Japan.
This paper intends to check the process of establishing art education for women as a social system, focusing on Women"s Art School. In addition to discourses on women"s art that was circulating in Japan at the time, various social factors such as the teacher qualification acquisition system were directly or indirectly intervened in the institutionalization process of Japanese modern art education for women.
