미국 시카고 대도시권의 한국인 자영업 특성과 성격 변화 = Characteristics of Korean Self-Employment in Chicago IL PMSA

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 미국 시카고 대도시권에 거주하는 한국인 이주자를 사례로 한국인 자영업의 특성과 성격 변화를 분석하였다. 미국 내 한국인 이주자의 자영업 종사비율은 다른 소수민족에 비하여 매우 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서도 같은 경향을 발견하였다. 그러나 세부적 분석 결과, 1990년대 미국으로 이주한 시카고 거주 한국인의 자영업 종사 비율은 한국인에 대한 일반적 인식과 달리 높은 편이 아니며, 그 이전에 이주한 한국인들에 비해 현저히 낮다. 이는 향후 미국 내 한국인 경제활동에 종전과 다른 변화의 가능성을 함의한다. 전형적인 소수민족 경제의 특성인 한국인 대상의 사업 비중이 높기는 하지만 업종 면에서 다른 소수민족을 상대로 한 중간상인(middleman)의 성격이 강화되고 있는 것에서도 그러한 변화의 단초를 발견할 수 있다. 한국인의 자영업 종사를 결정하는 중요 변수는 연령, 이주시기, 영어구사능력인데, 연령은 이주시기와 연관된다는 점에서 언제 미국으로 이주하였으며, 영어를 어느 정도 구사할 수 있느냐가 실질적으로 가장 중요한 요인라고 할 수 있다. 아울러 연구 결과는 소득이나 경제적 지위 면에서 자영업 종사가 비자영업 종사에 비해 주류 사회 적응에 효과적 통로가 되고 있음을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzed Korean ethnic entrepreneurship in Chicago metropolitan area. Previous studies have
suggested that the rate of self-employed workers in Korean immigrants is so higher than in other ethnic groups in
USA. My analysis also shows the high rate of self-employment in Korean immigrants. However, the rate of selfemployed
workers in Koreans who have immigrated since the 1990s is not high. This is different from the general
recognition on Korean immigrants. The fact has a implication that the pattern of Korean economic activities in USA
may change in the near future. The rate of coethnic businesses as a Korean-oriented entrepreneurship is still high, but
we need to pay attention that ethnic businesses as a middleman minority have increased in this context. Significant
determinants of self-employment are variables of age, immigrant period and English speaking ability. Variable of age
is closely related to immigrant period. Thus, immigrant period and English speaking ability are key variables of selfemployment
in Korean immigrants. In addition, the analysis shows that self-employment would be a effective channel
for Korean immigrants’ adaption to host society.
