정의로운 평화를 향하여 - 스탠리 하우어워스의 디트리히 본회퍼 읽기에 대한 비판적 고찰 = Toward just Peace: A Critical Study on Stanley Hauerwas’s Reading of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This article intends to critically read Stanley Hauerwas’s interpretation of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theology and ethics. In his “Performing the faith: Bonhoeffer and the Practice of Nonviolence,” Hauerwas argues that Bonhoeffer’s lifelong central concern was the visibility of the church. This means that as God took God’s space in the world through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, so the church has to take its own space in the world so that it becomes visible. According to Hauerwas, the church for Bonhoeffer becomes visible in the world through telling the truth because the world is full of lies. Furthermore, the church as the truth-telling community also becomes a visible community by living a peaceable life.
This essay argues that Hauerwas’s interpretation of Bonhoeffer seems to be problematic for two reasons. First, Hauerwas does not deal with the relationship between peace and justice in Bonhoeffer’s theology and ethics. Second, Hauerwas’s argument that Bonhoeffer was a nonviolent and nonresistant pacifist cannot reasonably explain why Bonhoeffer participated in the plan to kill Hitler.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 스탠리 하우어워스의 디트리히 본회퍼 해석에 대한 비판적 읽기를시도한다. 하우어워스에 의하면 본회퍼의 일생의 관심은 교회는 세상에 그 자체의공간을 차지하므로 드러나 보여야 한다는 교회의 가시성에 있었다. 이러한 가시성은 교회가 세상에 있지만, 세상과는 구별될 때 드러난다. 그런데 하우어워스에 따르면, 본회퍼에게서 교회와 세상을 구별하므로 교회가 보이게 하는 하나의 실천이 진리 말하기이다. 교회는 거짓이 난무하는 세상의 한 가운데서 진리를 말하는 사람들을 양육해 냄으로써 세상 가운데 자신을 보이게 해야 하며, 또한 진리를 말하는 교회는 폭력이 난무한 세상에서 평화의 공동체가 되어야 한다는 것이 본회퍼의 생각이라는 것이다.
필자는 이와 같은 하우어워스의 본회퍼 읽기에 대하여 두 가지로 비판한다. 첫째, 하우어워스는 진리와 정의가 있는 곳에 평화가 있다는 본회퍼의 언급을 인식하면서도, 진리에 대한 논의만 하지 본회퍼의 정의와 평화에 대한 논의를 고려하지 않는다는 점에서 그의 본회퍼 읽기는 단편적이다. 둘째, 하우어워스는 본회퍼를 원리적인 평화주의자로 해석하기 때문에, 본회퍼가 어떻게 히틀러 암살에 참여했는지를 합리적으로 설명하지 못한다.
결론적으로 필자는 본회퍼의 관심은 하우어워스나 요더처럼 비폭력 평화주의가아니라 정의로운 평화였음을 주장한다.
