The purpose of this study was to examine effects of mother's personality on parenting stress and behaviors. Subjects of this study were 425 mothers of young children aged 3-5 years old attending 2 kindergartens and 4 child care centers located Cheong-ju city and Chungbuk province. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's α, and Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient using the SPSS 12.0 program, and path analysis was done using AMOS 7.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, mother's open-mindedness of personality had a direct effect on parenting stress caused by dysfunctional parent-child interaction on while mother's extraversion of personality had directly impacted on parenting stress aroused by her own parenting. However, mother's neuroticism of personality had directly affected on all areas of parenting stress which it indicated mother's neuroticism was the most strong impactor on parenting stress.
Second, parenting stress caused by child and mother had direct effects on mother's controlling parenting while all areas of parenting stress caused by child, mother, and dysfunctional parent-child interaction had direct effects on mother's rejective parenting behavior. Mother's affectionate parenting behavior was directly affected by parenting stress caused parent-child dysfunctional interaction.
Third, mother's open-mindedness, extroversion, neuroticism of personality had indirect effects on mother's parenting behavior mediated by parenting stress.
