민주열사 이한열의 삶과 그에게서 계승해야 할 정신 = The Life of Democratic Martyr Lee Han-yeol and the Spirit that must be inherited from Him

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이한열 열사는 1966년 8월 29일 아버지 이병섭 씨와 어머니 배은심 씨의 2남 3녀 가운데 장남으로 태어났다. 그는 1987년 6월 9일 ‘고문살인 은폐규탄 및 호헌철폐 국민대회’ 출정을 위한 ‘범연세인총궐기대회’에 참가하던 중 최루탄에 맞아 쓰러졌고, 친구들의 부축을 받으며 세브란스 응급실로 옮겨져 의식을 잃었다. 이한열 열사는 중환자실에서 27일간 투병하던 1987년 7월 5일 새벽 2시 5분경 사망했고, 장례는 7월 9일 오전 8시 연세대학교에서 ‘애국학생 고(故) 이한열 열사 민주국민장’으로 치러졌다. 그때 그의 나이는 만 21세가 아직 되지 않았다. 이한열 열사는 부모에게는 사랑받는 자랑스러운 아들이었고, 친구와 선생님들에게는 모범생으로 인정받는 학생이었다. 후배들에게는 그들을 챙겨주는 다정다감한선배였고, 선배들에게는 연세대학교 차기 총학생회장으로 기대받는 후배였다. 사회적인 약자들에게는 친구가 되고자 했고, 한국의 민주화를 위해서는 결과적으로 불꽃이 되었던 민주인사였다. 이한열 열사는 자기성찰적인 삶을 살고자 했고, 사회적 약자들과 연대하는 삶을 살고자 했다. 이한열 열사는 모든 만남에 대해서 책임 있는 삶을 살고자 했고, 민주화를 향한 헌신과 열정의 삶을 살고자 했다. 그리고 이한열 열사는 기독교인으로서 기독교적인 정체성을 지니고 살고자 했다. 연세대학교는 이한열 열사와 오랜 기간을 동행했고, ‘이한열민주화운동기념사업회’ 설립을 통해 앞으로도 영원히 동행하고자 노력하고 있다. 이제 우리는 이한열 열사의 불꽃 같은 인생을 직시하며, 오늘의 젊은이들과 연세가 계승하고 발전시켜야 할 정신이 무엇인가를 논구할 필요가 있다. 인권과 민주주의의 실현을 위해서 자신을 희생하는 ‘한 알의 밀알’의 정신, 역사의 아픔을 직시하며 불의에 침묵하지 않는 저항의 정신, ‘신앙과 삶’, ‘앎과 삶’의 일치를 추구하는 신행합일(信行合一)과 지행합일(知行合一)의 정신, 고통에 몸부림치는 사회적인 약자들과 소수자들에 대한 연대의 정신 등이 그에게서 계승해야 할 정신이라 여겨진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Martyr Lee Han-yeol was born on August 29, 1966, as the eldest of two sons and three daughters to his father, Lee Byeong-seop, and his mother, Bae Eun-sim. On June 9, 1987, while participating in the ‘Pan-Yonsei Rally’ to campaign for the ‘National Rally to Condemn the Cover-up of Torture and Murder and Change the Constitution’, he was hit by tear gas and collapsed. He was taken to the Severance Emergency Room with the support of his friends, where he lost consciousness. Martyr Lee Han-yeol died at around 2:05 a.m. on July 5, 1987, after fighting for 27 days in the intensive care unit, and his funeral was held at Yonsei University at 8 a.m. on July 9 with the ‘National Burial for the Late Patriotic Student Lee Han-yeol’. At that time, he was not yet 21 years old. Martyr Lee Han-yeol was a proud son who was loved by his parents, and a student recognized as a model student by his friends and teachers. To his juniors, he was a kind and gentle senior who took care of them, and to his seniors, he was a junior who was expected to be the next student council president at Yonsei University. He wanted to be a friend to the socially underprivileged, and was a democratic figure who ultimately became a spark for Korea’s democratization. Martyr Lee Han-yeol aspired to live a self-reflective life in solidarity with the socially underprivileged. Martyr Lee Han-yeol wanted to live a life of responsibility for all his encounters, and to live a life of dedication and passion for democratization. And as a Christian, Martyr Lee Han-yeol tried to live with a Christian identity. Yonsei University has accompanied martyr Lee Han-yeol for a long time, and plans to continue to do so forever through the establishment of the ‘Lee Han-yeol DemocratizationMovement Memorial Association.’ Now, we need to look squarely at the fiery life of martyr Lee Han-yeol and discuss what spirit today’s young people and Yonsei University should inherit and develop. The spirit of ‘a grain of wheat’ that sacrifices itself for the realization of human rights and democracy, the spirit of resistance that faces the pain of history and does not remain silent against injustice. The spirit of unity of faith and action, unity of knowledge and action, and the spirit of solidarity toward the socially underprivileged and minorities struggling in pain are the spirits that must be inherited from him.
