This study focuses on implementation of literature class linked with school library so that literary response of 1st, 2nd graders of elementary school who are under beginning stage of literature would be activated by reading literary works. This study started influenced by a critical mind that it is hard to achieve a goal of literary education and to arouse a literary response of learners with a current text-based system only.
This study is intended to enhance activation of literary response by reorganizing teaching schedule and main subject material and studying literary instruction-learning plan linked with library based on goal and content of literary achievement of 7th reformed curriculum.
Topic of study was established in two categories as follows.
First, what kind of influence reorganization of literary class linked with library exerts over activation of literary response of learners?
Second, what kind of effect literary class linked with library exerts over class progress by the teachers?
Period of study implementation was extended from March 3, 2011 to July 14, 2011. 1st graders started from April 5 when school adaptation period including basic learning practice (training) ended and 2nd graders started from March 3 when period of autonomous class ended. Subjects of study was total 288 students (1st grader: 144 persons, 2nd grader: 144 persons, respectively) of 's‘ elementary school located at Daejeon Metropolitan City. Each grade had 4 classes and number of students per class was 36 persons. As a place of implementation, classroom of each grade and library were used and 8 week class for 1st graders and 13 week class for 2nd graders based on 40 minutes per class one time a week were progressed.
Library as a space of free idea and treasury of diversified works was utilized. A class of utilizing school library is not just to progress class by moving place to library but to widen a boundary of instruction-class limited to classroom, teachers and textbooks by providing voluntary participation and experience of learners by making advantage of diversified data and utilizing space available at library.
In particular, in view of a locational condition of library in our school, it is located at the most central part of our school and it may maintain a maximum accessibility to researcher and students and play a role of being able to be expanded in preparation for the future. In addition, as it is well ventilated and lighted, library could be utilized under a comfortable atmosphere.
Level of the works carried on textbook was sometimes much easier than reading level of learners and inherent pleasure woven into literary works was reduced as original works was not carried on textbook as they are due to compositional limitation of textbook. Researcher looked for the works suitable for the standard of literary achievement in curriculum and learning goal of each chapter and suggested them to learners.
Researcher reorganized teaching schedule, main subject material after looking for contents of literary chapter implemented in textbook based on achievement standard of literary area of 2007 reformed curriculum.
Focusing on realizing literary goal more extensively, class of researcher had made literary response to be aroused actively and as the learners were getting closer to books, they were made to take their time of visiting library willingly.
For first graders teacher in charge of class progressed class based on contents of reading Subject and researcher progressed literary class at library so that literary response would be deepened along with its class timing. Class plan was reorganized to be matched with achievement standard and chapter represented in curriculum by linkage and class timing was synchronized with a time when the teacher in charge progressed a class of chapter having a goal of literary achievement. For 2nd graders, contrary to 1st graders, a class of progressing one hour every week by selecting teaching schedule of chapter having literary achievement standard among reading subject was implemented.
In order to implement the class like this, the works to be utilized for each class were selected. As literary works to be utilized for class were furnished at library where researcher was working, learners were arranged to look for such works again after finishing their class and in particular, in case that same books were available in dozens, by finding the books of which same main subject material were available in dozens, literary class of majority was attempted to be progressed.
In view of the fact that individual literary responses of 36 persons which was class capacity were different one another, it is considered to be a meaningful selection of literary works. Of course, it was hard to find 36 kind of books but the works were selected so that 1st graders may read together with maximum mate and 2nd graders in group of 4 students.
As a result of progressing literary class linked with library as above,
learners' interest in literary works was increased and they had shown a positive attitude of reading by finding out a lot of works at library. In addition, in terms of ability of literary response, speaking and writing book report of learners were enhanced and they were motivated to show keen interest in literary class in library utilizing literary works.
As researcher could understand a flow of class while he (she) directly involved in reorganizing teaching schedule and main subject material in analyzing main subject materials of curriculum and textbook and selected literary works based on such process, teaching ability was enhanced consequently. In addition, it could be realized that for 1st and 2nd grade of elementary school, literary class linked with library was enabled through reorganization during a process of its actual implementation.
Literary class linked with library is a process of experience through which teaching method of teachers who wish to a
