This exercise, based on Morgan's metaphors of organizations, focuses on macro-level organization theory and attempts to expand students' vision of organizations by examining a variety of metaphorical ways of thinking about organizations. The exercise shows students that they already carry with them some models of what organizations are and how they work. Metaphors provide models of organization that are useful for thinking about complex, abstract organizational phenomena. In fact, the exercise shows that there are many different models that can be used (Morgan's Images). In the context of multiple metaphors, systems theory is introduced as a particularly useful metaphor (model).
