To investigate the potential use of fly-ash (FA) and zeolite (Z) as stabilizers that reduce phyto-availability of heavy metals (HM) in paddy rice, a pot experiment was conducted. Soil was artificially contaminated with Cu (125 mg kg-1), Cr (10 mg kg-1), Zn (700 mg kg-1) and placed into a pot. The heavy metal contamination corresponds to the Korean Soil Contamination Countermeasure Standard. Ten treatments were laid out in triplicates with HM as main treatment and FA and Z application as sub-treatment (0, 5, 10%). Three rice (Oryza sativa L.) was transplanted into the pot and cultivated under rain-shield conditions. Rice was sampled on August 3 at the active growing season and dry weight (DW) was determined. The rice DW was 14.6 g pot-1 for HM-untreated soil but it decreased to 8.4 g pot-1 by HM contamination. In HM treated soil, application of FA at 5% increased DW to 9.7 g pot-1; however, FA application at 10% and Z application at both 5 and 10% reduced DW of rice. Such pattern of FA and Z application was also observed in HM-untreated soil. Because it was evidenced that both FA and Z had a great capacity to adsorb not only HM but also nutrients (N and P) from a batch-experiment, such negative effect of FA and Z on rice growth was attributed to decreased availability of these nutrients in the soils.
