허버트 앨런 자일스 《중국 동화집(Chinese Fairy Tales)》 속 《聊齋志異》 번역 양상 = A Study on Herbert Allen Giles Translation Patterns of Liaozhaizhiyi(聊齋志異) in Chinese Fairy Tales

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 허버트 앨런 자일스의 《중국 동화집(Chinese Fairy Tales)》 속 《聊齋志異》 번역 양상을 살펴보고자 작성되었다. 자일스는 중국 주재 영국 외교관이자 한학자이다. 그의 가장 대표적인 번역서는 《Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio》로, 蒲松齡의 《요재지이》를 번역한 책이다. 이후 자일스는 《중국 동화집》을 편찬하면서 《요재지이》 속 8편의 이야기를 동화로 각색하여 수록했다. 본고는 자일스가 《중국 동화집》 속에 《요재지이》를 수록한 이유와 동화로 재구성한 의미를 살펴보았으며, 중국 원서 및 자일스의 성인용 《요재지이》 번역서와의 비교를 통해 아동문학 작품으로서 《요재지이》 번역 양상을 스코포스 이론에 기반해 분석했다. 스코포스 이론은 대상 독자의 구성과 특성에 따라 번역 전략을 세우는 것을 강조하는 이론이므로 특정 독자를 겨냥한 동화 《요재지이》 번역 특징을 분석하는 데 적용했다. 《중국 동화집》 속 8편의 《요재지이》를 분석한 결과, 문장 구조가 성인용 《요재지이》 번역서에 비해 단순하다는 것을 알 수 있었고, 아동문학 작품에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 생동감 있는 효과 연출도 살펴볼 수 있었다. 또한 모호한 정보가 명확히 표현되도록 구체적으로 서술하기도 했다. 이러한 특징들을 통해 《요재지이》를 아동문학 작품으로 각색하는 데 있어서 자일스가 가장 중요하게 여겼던 면은 아동들이 재미를 느끼는 동시에 교육적인 가치를 실현하는 일이었음을 밝혔다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper was written to examine the translation of Liaozhaizhiyi in Herbert Allen Giles’s Chinese Fairy Tales. Giles is a British diplomat and Chinese scholar in China. His most representative translation is Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio a book that is translated from Liaozhaizhiyi by PuSongling. Later, while compiling Chinese Fairy Tales Giles included eight stories in Liaozhaizhiyi as fairy tales. This paper examines the reasons for Giles’ inclusion of Liaozhaizhiyi in the Chinese Fairy Tales and the meaning of the reconstruction as a fairy tale, and analyzed the translation of Liaozhaizhiyi as a work of children’s literature based on the skopos theory through comparison with the Chinese original and Giles’s adult translation of Liaozhaizhiyi Since the skopos theory is a theory that emphasizes the establishment of a translation strategy according to the composition and characteristics of the target reader, it was applied to analyze the characteristics of the translation of a fairy tale Liaozhaizhiyi targeting a specific reader. As a result of analyzing Liaozhaizhiyi in eight Chinese Fairy Tales, it was found that the sentence structure was simpler than that of the Liaozhaizhiyi translation for adults, and there was also a lively effect that is common in children’s literature works. In addition, it was described in detail so that ambiguous information was clearly expressed. Through these characteristics, it was revealed that the most important aspect of Giles’s adaptation of Liaozhaizhiyi into a work of children’s literature was that children had fun and realized educational values.
