      1. The superior oblique muscle of eye, one of the muscles derived from branchial mesenchyme, and gracilis muscle, one of the muscles derived from somites, from 207 (106 in male, and 101 in female) normal Korean fetuses aged from the 4th fetal month to the term were studied by means of gross and histobiometrical methods, and various statistical value are presented.
      2. Of the rates of growth, the gracilis muscle is greater than the superior oblique muscle.
      3. The number of the muscle fibers from both groups are increased continuously until the term of the fetal life, even after 4th fetal month.
      4. In the feature of growth of the caliber of the muscle fibers throughout the period from the 4th month to the term of the fetal life, none of the significant difference between both muscle groups would be concluded under a statistical support.
      5. It is observed in the superior oblique muscle group that the mean caliber of the muscle fibers from the central portion is greater statistically than that of the muscle fibers from the peripheral portion throughout the fetal life in present study, whereas, none of the similarity to those of the above is obser- vable in the gracilis muscle group.
      6. Although there is a little difference between both muscle groups in the ratio of the total cross sectional area of the muscle fibers to the cross sectional area of the muscle of its own, in general, the ratios from both groups are increased continuously throughout the period from the 4th month until the term of the present observation.
      7 . The growth in the caliber of the skeletal muscle fibers of fetus in general appears to be different from that of the muscle from the postnatal individuals. It seems to be infiuenced not only by its own function, but also by factors unexplained until this time yet.
