영국 사회학의 사회학 = 탈분과적 접근과 한국 사회학에 대한 교훈

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 영국 사회학의 지적ㆍ제도적 특성을 사회학적으로 분석함으로써 영국 사회학의 성과와 한계를 밝히고 이로부터 한국 사회학 및 사회학 일반의 독특한 지식체제에 대한 교훈을 얻는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 글은 ① 역사적으로 기반이 취약한데도 제도적ㆍ내용적으로 성공한 영국 사회학의 현황을 개괄하고, ② 그 독특한 지적ㆍ제도적 특성과 성공을 설명하는 요인들을 검토하며 ③ 영국 사회학의 사례가 한국 사회학과 사회학적 지식 생산에 주는 몇 가지 교훈에 대해 성찰한다. 영국 사회학은 주변성과 늦은 제도화로 인해 사회학 분과경계와 정체성이 분명히 규정되지 않았고, 사회학 전통의 결여로 인해 외국의 이론을 수입해야 했으며, 자원부족과 ‘반양방’ 문화로 인해 상대적으로 연구의 범위가 제한되었다. 하지만 바로 그 때문에 영국 사회학의 독특한 특징이자 성과인 탈분과적 접근, 새로운 연구영역의 개척과 이론적 혁신이 가능해졌고, 여러 다양한 이론들과 방법론이 접합될 수 있었으며, 이론에 의해 가이드된 경험연구가 추구될 수 있었다. 그 결과 영국 사회학은 확립된 사회학 분과가 규정하는 이론과 방법론에 따른 분과학문의 주요 주제에 대한 연구보다는 분과의 경계를 넘어 다양한 이론을 사용하는 테마 중심적 연구라는 특징을 띠게 되었다. 그리고 이러한 탈분과적 접근은 사회학자 집단의 전문(직)화와 결합하여 영국 사회학의 상대적인 제도적 건전성과 학문적 독자성과 우수성을 낳았다. 이러한 영국 사회학의 사례는 비록 모든 답을 줄 수 있는 것은 아니지만 사회학의 위기, 특히 한국 사회학의 위기에 대한 몇 가지 진단 및 그에 대한 발전적 대안을 검토할 수 있는 하나의 준거점이 될 수 있다. 영국 사회학은 한국 사회학의 위기를 이제까지와 같이 신자유주의, 비실용성, 모호한 분과학문적 정체성, 독자적 이론의 부재와 외국이론의 수입, 대중성(또는 전문성)의 부재에서 찾는 것이 과연 올바른가에 대해 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article analyzes the intellectual and institutional characteristics of British sociology in order to examine its contributions and limits and derive some lessons for Korean sociology in particular and sociology as a discipline in general. For this purpose, this article ① overviews the present status of British sociology that can be considered successful in institutional and intellectual terms; ② examines possible factors that can explain its particular institutional and intellectual characteristics and success; and ③ reflects upon some lessons from the case of British sociology for Korean sociology in particular and sociological knowledge production in general. Due to its peripheral status and late institutionalization, British sociology has had no clear disciplinary identities or boundaries, has been importing foreign theories as a result of the lack of its own sociological tradition, and has been limited in the scope of research by the lack of resources and the ‘anti-quant’ culture. However, thanks to the very same reason, British sociology could acquire its own distinct qualities, i.e. post- or pre-disciplinary approach, new frontiers of research, articulations of plural theories and methodologies, theoretical innovations, and theoretically-informed empirical studies. As a result, British sociology is characterized by theme-oriented research that transcends narrow disciplinary boundaries and articulates various theories, rather than mainstream research as defined by the narrowly defined disciplinary boundaries, theories, methods, and topics. Such post-disciplinary approaches, combined with the professionalization of sociologists, contributed to the relative institutional health as well as academic distinctiveness and excellence of British sociology. The case of British sociology cannot answer everything, but may well function as a reference point in examining some diagnoses and prescriptions for the crisis of Korean sociology, i.e. in reflecting upon the attribution of the crisis to neoliberalism, impracticality, vague disciplinary identity, the absence of distinctively Korean sociological theories, and the lack of popularization (or speciality).
