알키비아데스 1에서 소크라테스와 자기 인식 = Socrates and Self-knowledge in Alcibiades I

This paper attempts to elucidate the philosophical meanings of self-knowledge by analyzing and coherently understanding the context of the dialogues where the phrase “Know yourself” appears three times in the Alcibiades I. Self-knowledge is closely related to self-care, and its meaning is getting deeper in the course of dialogue. The first analysis makes it clear that for the sake of self-knowledge realization of one’s own ignorance is required first and foremost and that self-knowledge involves self-examination concerning the righteousness of one’s desires. The second analysis leads us to see that self-knowledge aims after self-improvement and that the self itself, which is the true self, the object of self-knowledge, can be taken as the essential part of soul in the universal dimension. Thirdly, through the analysis of the analogy of eye and soul, I try to show that this analogy implies contemplating oneself as one is, and with respect to the knowledge of the intelligent part of the soul, likened to the pupil of the eye I critically examine the god-centered interpretation. We cannot say that by knowing about God one can know oneself better. Rather through the self-knowledge as to the intelligent part of the soul, which is divine one can come even to the knowledge of God. In conclusion, one who attains to self-knowledge in the true sense of the word can realize the goodness by virtue of wisdom and prudence of one’s true self, and for this reason one’s conduct can be temperate and just.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 󰡔알키비아데스 I󰡕에서 세 차례 언급되는 ‘너 자신을 알라’는 글귀가 나오는 대화 맥락을 분석하고 통일적으로 이해함으로써 ‘자기 인식’이 지니는 철학적 의미를 밝히고자 하는 시도이다. 자기 인식은 자기를 돌봄과 밀접히 연관되고, 대화의 과정에서 그 의미가 점점 심화되어 나타난다. 첫 번째 분석을 통해, 자기 인식을 위해서는 자신의 무지에 대한 자각이 선결적으로 요구되며, 또한 자기 인식은 자신의 욕망이 과연 올바른 것인지에 대한 반성을 포함한다는 점을 밝혔다. 두 번째 분석을 통해, 자기 인식은 자기 개선을 목표로 하며, 자기 인식의 대상인 참된 ‘자기’인 ‘자체 그 자체’(auto to auto)를 보편적인 차원에서의 혼의 본질적 부분을 가리키는 표현으로 이해할 수 있다고 보았다. 세 번째로, 눈과 혼의 유비에 대한 분석을 통해 이 유비는 자신을 있는 그대로 바라보아야 함을 함축하고 있다는 점을 밝혔고, 눈동자에 비유된 “지혜가 나타나는 혼의 부분”의 인식과 관련해서는 신을 중심에 놓고 해석하는 견해를 비판적으로 검토하였다. 우리는 신을 앎으로써 자신을 더 잘 알 수 있게 된다기보다, ‘신적인 것’인 “지혜가 나타나는 혼의 부분”에 대한 자기 인식을 통해서 신에 관한 인식으로까지 나아갈 수 있다. 결국 진정한 의미에서 자기 인식에 이른 사람은 참된 자아의 지혜와 분별에 근거해 좋음을 인식할 수 있기에 절제 있고 정의롭게 행할 수 있다.
