현대미술에 함의된 ‘몸’ 연구 = ‘A Study on ‘body’ in Comtemporary Art : with a special attention to body art after the 60’s

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 현대미술에 함의된 몸에 관한 연구다. 우리가 지금 왜 몸을 논해야만 하는지 몸에 관한 철학적 담론을 근거로 정신에 비해 열등한 대상으로 취급받아 왔던 몸을 다시 제고할 것이다. 몸은 우리의 존재와 사유의 근거임에도 불구하고 오랫동안 부정적인 대상으로 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 이제 몸은 정신에 종속되는 관계를 벗어나 철학이나 미술을 비롯한 많은 분야에서 새로운 관심사로 부상하고 있다. 이 연구에서 새롭게 부상하는 몸이 미술의 영역에서는 어떻게 작용하며 전개되어 왔는지 살펴볼 것이며, 1960년대부터 20세기 말까지 진행된 신체미술은 ‘특정한 장소로서의 신체’, ‘개념적 성격의 신체’, ‘페미니즘과 신체’로 분류하여 논의를 진행할 것이다. 이후 21세기에 들어서면서 몸은 성형되고 변형되고 인공기관과 결합되는 등 놀라운 변화를 겪게 된다. 디지털 혁명과 유전자 공학에 힘입어 인간은 더이상 이성을 근간으로 하는 인간주체가 아니라 새로운 형태의 인간 이해를 요구하고 있으며 신체는 계속 수정되고 있다. 이른바 포스트휴먼 시대가 도래 한 것이다. 이처럼 몸에 가해지는 다양한 시술들이 사소한 일상처럼 느껴지는 포스트휴먼 시대에 예술가들이 몸을 다루는 방식과 해석은 과거와 어떻게 다른지 신체 경계에 대한 새로운 시각을 논의할 것이다. 또한 신체변형 미술에 관한 작업사례를 제시하여 포스트휴먼 시대의 신체는 우리에게 어떠한 것들을 수용하고 융합하게 하는지 알아 볼 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose is to investigate the physical body inherent in contemporary art. For the current study, two questions are raised: 1) Why we discuss the body at current arts and 2) What is the real value of body arts. It is true that body arts is inferior to mind counterparts from a philosophical discourse. For a long time, to deal with a physical body is not a welcoming subject treating it as a negative subject at best from a reasonal aspect. However, getting over the traditional thoughts which put the mind and reasons over the physical body, the physical body is becoming a main subject from a philosophical and visual art point of view.
The current study is to examine what is the thing which affects the newly emerging physical body arts and how it is developed in the visual art field. For this study, we examine the body arts which are made a progress from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. The subject of current study is classified into three categories: body as specific site, body as conceptual framework, and feminism and body. Later, with beginning of the 21st century, the arts in dealing with physical body go through great changes into the new areas: plastic surgery, body distortion, and prosthesis surgery. Along with digital revolution and genetic engineering, human being is no longer entity just based on rational reasons. Instead, human investigation into a new phase of human relationship with physical body witnesses its modification. With the idea of post-modern, this paper discusses new perspectives about artists’ interpretation and working on body parts as their subject during post-human era. In addition, the more focus of the present study goes on to visual art works on distorted body art followed by the discussion on in what way they present physical body in post-human era.
