아동 극단의 정체성과 창작 방식의 연동(聯動) 연구 -‘이야기꾼의 책공연’의 창작 사례를 중심으로- = A study on the interplay between the identity of children’s theater company and their way of creation - Focusing on the work of ‘Bookteller’s Quilt’ -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 사회적 기업이자 아동극단인 ‘이야기꾼의 책공연’이 어떻게 단체의 정체성을 세우고, 이를 창작 방법론으로 구현하고 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
본 극단은 사회적 기업이 추구하는 ‘다자 이해의 참여와 이해를 반영할 수 있는 의사결정구조’를 갖추고, 이러한 ‘소속 구성원이 의사결정에 참여할 수 있는 민주적 구조’를 구성원들의 공동창작·공동연출 방식으로 연결하고 있다. 여기에 더해 ‘어린이에 대한 이해’ 관점을 좁혀가는 토론을 거쳐 관객 참여 워크숍을 통한 창작 과정, 극장을 벗어난 연극 형식을 전제로 한 만들기 모색 등을 중시한다.
이렇게 창작된 결과물은 레퍼토리화 되는 데 극단 측은 이를 ‘복수의 구성원들의 협동의 산물이며 사회적 산물’로 정의한다. 그리고 ‘그림책을 예술서비스로써 읽어주기를 탐구하는 과정에서 만들어진’이 산출물은 일반 공연 제작 방식과는 달리 관객의 참여과정을 통해서 비로소 한편의 연극으로 완성도를 갖춰간다고 말한다.
본고는 이러한 방법을 통해 개발한 극단의 대표작 중 ‘우리 옛이야기의 연극화 작업’을 담은 3편을 중심으로 그 구현된 바를 들여다보았다. <평강공주와 온달바보>, <별별왕>, <호랑이한테 잡아 먹혔다가>를 통해 전통극 요소와 우리 옛이야기를 어떻게 활용하고 있는지를 알아보고, 극단의 인적 자원을 최대한 활용하고자 하는 구성 전략을 정리하고자 했다. 한편으로는 옛이야기를 기반으로 하기에 현대적인 주제 부여와 다른 가치발견에 다소 소극적인 점, 공동창작방식에서 비롯되는 주인공의 약화 요소 등을 거론하고자 했다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article examines how the ‘Bookteller’s Quilt’, a children’s theatre company and social enterprise, establishes their identity and embodies it through their creative methodology.
This company has a ‘decision making structure that can induce the participation of all members and reflect their needs.’ This structure is one of the ideas of social enterprise. ‘This democratic decision making structure which assures the participation of all members’ they are applying to their co-creation and co-directing processes. Moreover they discuss fully to ‘understand children’ in the more proper perspective. They also emphasize on the co-creation method through the audience participation workshop and try to establish the new theatrical form and staging method beyond the limit of theatrical conventions. The increasing good repertoire is the result of these processes.
They consider this repertoire as ‘the fruit of cooperation between all members and social interaction with audiences.’ They came to have this repertoire in the process of exploring the picture book for reading as a way of artistic service. They insist, unlike the common theatrical works their repertoire obtains artistic wholeness through the participation of audience.
In this article I looked into how their methods and processes are embodied especially in their major works: < Pyunggang Princess and Ondal Idiot >, < Byul Byul Kings >, < Escaping from the stomach of tiger >. These works were all produced as ‘the theatricalization of our korean folk tales’. I examined how they used and integrated the elements of traditional korean drama and archetypal stories into these works. I also looked into their staging strategy to make the best of their human resources. On the other hand, I tried to raise and discuss some questions: Their works are more or less weak in dealing with modern topics and inactive in conveying other various values because they are based on the korean old folk tales. And with the co-creation method the role of main character are somewhat diminished etc.
