This dissertation investigates the transnational practices and spatial constructions of Mongolian graduate students studying in South Korea through a narrative inquiry into their lived experiences. While existing literature often frames international students as temporary sojourners or cultural adapters within host societies, such perspectives fall short of capturing the complexity and agency embedded in their everyday lives. This study reconceptualizes international students as transnational migrants who actively engage in dynamic and layered practices across multiple social spaces.
Drawing on Faist’s (2010) conceptualization of transnational social space, the research analyzes students’ practices across five key domains—family, socio-cultural life, economy, politics, and academia—in relation to three types of social spaces: transnational kinship networks, circular student networks, and local communities. Based on in-depth narrative interviews with seven Mongolian graduate students in South Korea, the analysis categorizes their transnational practices into four types: kinship-centered, network-based self-reliant, community-engaged, and hybrid. These types illustrate that transnational practices are fluid and shaped by temporal and situational factors.
The findings reveal that international students are not passive recipients of host education systems but multifaceted agents performing academic, caregiving, economic, and civic roles while navigating across and within transnational spaces. Concepts such as cultural mediator, transnational family, and survival labor help elucidate how Mongolian students negotiate constraints and mobilize resources in both home and host societies.
Theoretically, this study expands the scope of transnationalism by connecting international student experiences to broader discussions on transnational migration, liminal identities, and civic engagement. Practically, it calls for multi-layered and integrative policy frameworks that recognize international students not merely as academic participants, but as active members of families, networks, and communities.
Conclusion, this research reinterprets the lives of international students as transnational practices embedded within complex social spaces, contributing to the theoretical advancement of transnational migration studies and the practical development of inclusive international education policies.
