This thesis defines Heungseon Daewongun’s after death ritual, held in the year 1898, as Yejang (the funeral of the royal family), Chubong(granting official rank after death), and Cheonbong (moving the grave) in the order taken place after Hongseo(death of royal family) and then examines the preparation of funeral ritual and its implementation. And then it compares and analyzes it with Princess Myungon’s Yejang process and the installation process of the prince of the Korean Empire to look into the funeral ritual of Heungseon Daewongun and its characteristics.
Heungseon Daewongun passed away on February 22, 1898, and his Yejang was proceeded by taking Princess Myungon’s Yejang as a precedent. Based on the fact that Heungseon Daewongun chose his own burial ground during his living years, that there was Jeongjosi(halt of government and commerce) for 4 days, and that it differentiated itself from Princess’s Yejang by having Oouje, the thesis finds that Daewongun‘s Yejang occupied identical or higher place than the position of princess.
Heungseon Daewongun’s Chubong carried out in the year 1907, was operated by Wansoongun. The gold seal for this ceremony was the same size as the one that was used to install the prince, however, since it didn’t use gold books, this thesis clarifies that Chubong of Daewongun was the same or lower than the position of the prince.
Heungwon, the graveyard for Heungseon Daewongun, was built to suit his elevated position, the Heonui Daewonwang after Chubong. Heungwon was the first and the last example of utilizing Gungwonje in the Korean Empire, and the most of stone figures placed at the time of construction used the previous ones.
Heungseon Daewongun’s funeral ritual was the last example of Sachin Chusung(worship of birth mother), first promoted by Gojong and then completed by Sunjong and it represents the
