The feeling with which a drunkard craves alcohol, is quite analogous to that which prompts a hungry man to seek food. Food is a stimulus which nature has taught the system to demand. Alcohol is a stimulus which habit has taught the system to demand, and the privation of which it will not endure. When a drunkard first attempts to reform, the conflict is tremendous; but by perseverance the craving subsides, and he becomes satisfied with the stimulus in his daily food.
