This study aims to get to the bottom of Dongsalpuli beat which is one of the music of Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) in the East Coast.
Gut(Shaman exorcism) is analogous to the reservoir of traditional art, replete with resources of comprehensive art, such as religious offer and banquet, namely religious rituals, songs, heretical doctrine, dance, instrumental music, and so on.
Therefore, the study on the shaman exorcism is in the same context with the approach to the essence of traditional art, and a lot of researches were conducted on that point, which ultimately enriches the foundation of traditional art in various ways. At present, studies are being conducted with respect to Gut(Shaman exorcism)
With the growing interest in Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast recently, the colorful and unpredictably variable structure of beat used in Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast has been studied extensively not only by traditional percussionists but also by performers of creation national music, composers and academic circles.
However, no remarkable progress has been made with respect to the beat of single movement, such as the Gutgeori, Dongsalpuli, etc, because studies preponderantly concentrate on the beat of devided movement, such as Puneori, Dreonggaengi, or Cheongbo, etc.
In response to that, this researcher analyzed Dongsalpuli beat, one of the single movement beat of Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast in an attempt to figure out how its original beat and variations are structured.
For this study, I collected and analyzed all tunes of Janggu(a double-headed drum pinched in at the middle) for Dongsalpuli performed by Kim Yong-Taek who had the skill and knowledge to stage the Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast in Bucheon on February 26, 2006 during the period to hand down the skill and knowledge, starting from February 25, 2006. The collected beat of Dongsalpuli of the East Coast totaled 89 beats, and only Janggu was played continuously for 2‘ 40“.
The findings of this study is like this:
First, the name of beat, called 'Dongsalpuli' was found to exist in all folk music genres with the same name of beat and rhythmic pattern. Though there was some difference depending on genres, it can be said generally to be the tempo of two-devided four-four time(♩=140~208). However, The Dongsalpuli of the Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast possessed the rhythmic pattern of ♪ × 6, or □× 2, tempo (♩=120). Therefore, Dongsalpuli which is generally used and the Dongsalpuli of the Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast are the different beats in terms of rhythmic pattern.
Second, the Dongsalpuli of the Byeolsingut(shaman exorcism) of the East Coast can be classified into 5 rhythmic patterns in general: Basic, ?× 3 type with the form of 2+2+2, syncopated beat type, connected beat type, complex type.
syncopated beat enables the unique and gorgeous variation for the beat structure of shamanic music of the East Coast. Those patterns are organized and structured by the musical choice of performers.
Third, the beat of Dongsalpuli is freely organized without specific rules.
The performance of Dongsalpuli circulates in the form of [basic beat - variation - basic beat - variation - basic beat], and repeats the cycle of tension and relaxation. Moreover, it often materializes the variation(The ratio of connected beat comprises nearly half of all beats) more continuously than the intermittent performance.
Fourth, the accent of Dongsalpuli's beat is realized differently, depending on the rhythmic pattern.
Basically, the accent of traditional beat lies in the first beat. However, the form of accent varies, depending on the variation of beat, and the accent of Dongsalpuli of the East Coast follows such a form. The patterns of accent can be classified into 1st beat accent type, ?× 3 type, syncopated beat type, and specific type.
