물질주의가 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 영향: 완벽주의적 자기제시의 조절효과를 중심으로 = Impact of Materialism on Psychological Well-Being : Focusing on Moderating Effect of Perfectionistic Self-Presentation

The purpose of this study was to examine whether perfectionistic self-presentation in adults in their 20s and 30s would moderate the relationship between materialism and psychological well-being. A total of 226 adults (172 women; Mage=25.02, SD=4.00) completed a questionnaire that included materialism, psychological well-being, and perfectionistic self-presentation scales. Consistent with past research, materialism significantly correlated with psychological well-being, yet perfectionistic self-presentation did not moderate the relationship between materialism and psychological well-being. In contrast, that relationship was significantly moderated by the nondisclosure of imperfection, a subfactor of perfectionistic self-presentation, i.e., when the level of nondisclosure of imperfection is above average, the level of psychological well-being decreases as individuals pursue materialism. This result indicates that the nondisclosure of imperfection leads to a lower level of psychological well-being among materialistic individuals. This study thus demonstrates that, consistent with prior research, materialism negatively associates with psychological well-being, and it is significant that the nondisclosure of imperfection is the variable regulating this relationship.
