Reading aloud to young children has been to literacy education what two aspirins and a little bed rest has been to the family doctor. Contrary to our common belief, however, the activity per se may not ensure a positive effect on young children’s overall literacy development. In this regard, as an alternative way of reinforcing social interaction meditated by verbal and emotional exchanges between an adult reader and young listeners in read-alouds, connecting read-alouds to dialogue and to story retelling was investigated. Seen from our literacy education context, the simplicity and flexibility of the implementation of read-alouds may be very practical. Additionally, a few tips were provided to effectively conduct such a read-aloud activity across home and school.
