우디 앨런의 「블루 재스민」: 테네시 윌리엄스의 「욕망이라는 이름의 전차」의 재현과 상호텍스트성 = Woody Allen`s Blue Jasmine: The Representation and Intertextuality of Tennessee Williams` A Streetcar Named Desire

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우디 앨런(Woody Allen) 감독의 2013년 영화 「블루 재스민(Blue Jasmine)」은 개봉 당시 버나드 매도프(Bernard Madoff)의 투자 사기 실화와 앨런의 전여자친구인 미아 패로우(Mia Farrow)와의 악연, 그리고 테네시 윌리엄스(Tennessee Williams)의 연극 「욕망이라는 이름의 전차(A Streetcar Named Desire)」를 연상시킨다는 평가를 받았다. 본고는 이러한 맥락을 고려하여 감독의 이전 영화들과 인터뷰들을 바탕으로 해당 영화 제작에 영향을 끼친 요소들을 분석하는 한편 이 영화 속에서 우디 앨런이 일관되게 추구해온 주제를 추출하는 것을 목표로 한다. 「블루 재스민」은 「욕망이라는 이름의 전차」와의 비교 분석을 통하여 그 특징이 두드러지게 나타나는데, 비극 장르인 「욕망이라는 이름의 전차」의 여주인공 블랑쉬 드보아(Blanche DuBois)를 희극적으로 재현한 데 그 핵심이 있다. 이러한 방식의 상호텍스트적(Intertextual) 접근을 통하여, 감독은 단순한 각색을 넘어선 재창조를 시도한다. 즉, 「욕망이라는 이름의 전차」의 이야기 구성을 차용하는데 그치지 않고 추가적으로 매도프의 실화를 접목시킴으로써 21세기 미국 경제를 조명할 뿐 아니라, 비극적 상황 속의 반영웅적 주인공을 코미디라는 틀 안에서 풀어냄으로써 그의 오랜 관심 주제인 인생의 공허함을 자신만의 독특한 장르인 “진지한 코미디”를 통하여 드러낸다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Woody Allen`s 2013 film Blue Jasmine triggers memories of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scandal, Allen`s ill-fated common-law marriage with Mia Farrow, and Tennessee Williams` play, A Streetcar Named Desire(1947). This paper aims to analyze Blue Jasmine by understanding the contexts that seemingly shape it and extracting the director`s intention by examining his previous films and interviews. The characteristics of Blue Jasmine especially reveal themselves when the movie is compared with A Streetcar Named Desire in that Blue Jasmine captures Allen`s unique world of film based on his love for tragedy which shows in adept pursuit of comedy, as Allen transplants A Streetcar Named Desire`s tragic heroine, Blanche DuBois, directly into a comedic frame. In this intertextual approach, Allen attempts re-creation, going beyond mere adaptation. In addition to shedding light on the 21st century American economy by grafting Mrs. Madoff`s story, he depicts the emptiness of life through the frame of comedy with an anti-heroic protagonist in a tragic situation. By doing so, the director creates a “serious comedy” in his own style.
