배빗의 리듬구조인 길이음렬과 시점조직의 공존에 대한 시론 - <현악4중주 제2번>을 중심으로 = The Analysis of Rhythmic Structure and Time Point System by Milton Babbitt

Babbitt’s rhythmic structures in twelve-tone music are defined as duration rows and a time point system. The duration row, which he experimented with in his early work, contains different values and represents durations proportionally to makes harmonies. The duration row should be ordered sets. On the other hand, the time point system is 12 equidistant points in a set order. The elements of a time point row are decided not by duration but by location. Babbitt’s two rhythmic structures take different approaches but can coexist or maintain similar relationship in various twelve-tone operations such as pitch class rows. Babbitt employed duration rows which have twelve different values as a main rhythmic structure in String Quartet No. 2. This paper will examine the coexistence of those two different structures of rhythm, duration rows and time point rows, in Babbitt’s String Quartet No. 2.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

배빗의 리듬 구조는 12음 음렬의 음악적 영향과 발전을 통해 만들어진 길이음렬과 시점조직체계로 규정되어진다. 초창기 그의 음악에 시도되었던 길이음렬은 일정한 길이 혹은 기준이 되는 리듬 단위에 따라 다양하고 특색 있는 길이의 리듬을 음렬화 하여 순서대로 구성하는 것이다. 반면에 1950년대 이후 배빗의 작품에서 볼 수 있는 시점조직은 일정하게 기준이 되는 리듬을 단위로 하여 동등하게 12개의 시점으로 나누어진 모듈을 가지며, 이 12개의 시점을 음렬적으로 배치하는 것을 말한다. 즉 시점조직의 음렬은 길이에 의해 결정되는 것이 아니고 시점의 위치에 의해 결정되어 진다고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 배빗은 <현악4중주 제2번>을 통해 그의 초창기 리듬구조인 길이음렬을 주되게 선택하고 있지만 동시에 아직 완성되지는 않았지만 시점조직체계의 시도 또한 발견할 수 있다. 결과적으로 길이음렬과 시점조직은 배빗의 음악에 있어서 가장 주요하게 적용되고 발전 되어진 리듬적 음렬 체계라고 할 수 있다. 서로 다른 이 두 리듬체계는 음렬적 변형을 동일하게 가지며 그의 <현악4중주 제2번>에서 공존함을 알 수 있다.
