The thesis identified in this paper is 'Understanding of the Priesthood through the ordination rite of priest'. The reason for this thesis is to show that a priest is a man who helps the bishop and serves the people of God through the ordination.
Today, some priests are not seen as a servant of the people of God, but as a master over the believers. This gives the believers a distorted meaning of priesthood. Priests should look at the meaning of the ordination to understand their duties correctly since the ordination to the priesthood clearly shows who the priests are and how they should live as priests. In this context, we will look at the identity and duties of priests based on the ordination to the priesthood, and also this paper will present how they should perform their duties in life.
This paper consists of three chapters.
In the first chapter, it describes the duties of Jesus Christ in the New Testament and how his duties were inherited. Jesus' duties were for the salvation of the people, and after his death, his disciples succeeded him. What is noteworthy is that Jesus' disciples understood their duties as a service for the Christian community.
In the second chapter, we will look at how the church ordination has changed. According to Hippolytus' "Apostolic Succession," the ordination from the early church consisted only of imposition of hands and its litany. Since then, the Roman Rite has added a various other rituals to the ordination to make a difference, the old Roman and Roman-French ordination are the typical examples. In 1986 revised rite, which is still used today, emphasized the essential rite, the imposition of hands and prayer.
In the third chapter, it outlines the elements and their meanings of the priestly ordination, focusing on the revised rite. In particular, homily, imposition of hands, and prayers during the ordination to the priesthood specify the meaning of the priest's identity and duties. Ordination also stresses that priest should faithfully maintain his duties in life. This means that the priest must follow Christ's example and become a true servant for the people of God.
Through the ordination to the priesthood, in this paper, we will look at the true meaning of the priesthood and how to make it happen in life. Above all, it will provide a guide to those who will live as priests, telling them the proper meaning of their duties and the right direction. To conclude, this paper will be a guideline to the priests and help them to serve God's people contributing to the growth of the church of today with the right spirit.
