This study proposes a unified theoretical framework to account for wh-extraction from adjuncts in English. Traditional accounts, such as Huang’s (1982) Condition on Extraction Domain (CED)and Chomsky’s (2004) pair-Merge approach, fail to explain the selective transparency observed in certain adjuncts. While Kanno’s (2008) phase-based analyses capture the contrast between finite and non-finite adjuncts, they cannot fully account for cases where extraction remains possible despite apparent phase boundaries. Building on the extended framework of semantic roles proposed by as Luraghi (2003, 2005), this study argues that adjuncts carrying specific semantic roles—purpose, cause, and manner—function as theta-marked domains, thereby allowing wh-extraction without violating the CED. This extended theta-marking approach integrates syntactic and semantic perspectives, providing a principled explanation for adjunct transparency.
